Anyone show their dog?

I would like to know more about it. My father showed my golden retriever when I was younger. I have some questions though, and it's because that my situation is a little different.

ETA: Here are some of my specific questions:

1) where have you shown your dog?
2) besides obedience training, was there any additional training you did?
3) i think this would be a fun experience and my dog is super smart (has already learned heel, sit, and a few other commands w/ out formal training and seems to pick up on things very quickly. Plus he has a very good stance and has excellent qualities that are considered standard for the breed as per the AKC). was it a fun experience for you?
4) when my dad showed our family dog, he used his breeder name in front of his pet name. my question is, do you have to do this? the reason i ask, while i have pedigree papers, some are familiar w/ the situation surrounding oreo's purchase (got him from a broker passing himself off as a breeder), if he wins I don't want to give any credit to the place he originated from, since we found out it was a mill. also will that be something they hold against him in judging?

We are really doing this for fun for us and the dog.

Re: Anyone show their dog?

You'd be better off contacting a trainer. They have experience with show dogs, training and requirements.
I know you can't show a dog if it's been fixed, but other than that I'm not really sure.
The lack of lineage may be a problem...usually, you have to show the lineage of where the dog has come from to ensure there are no weaknesses.
There is a trainer that works out of the Pet Supplies Plus in Northport that has been training and raising show dogs forever...We took Misty there for agility for a while, she isn't eligible for show cuz she is spayed.

Re: Anyone show their dog?

oreo is a love and please try not to take this the wrong way, but your chances of showing him, especially since he is from a mill, are slim.
usually yo work closely with the dogs' breeder. you buy a show quality dog form a breeder with a special contract. you use the breeders name in front of their call name because it is usually in the contract, since THEY bred the dog, they should get recognized for breeding an AKC show dog.
i am sure you can show him in smaller shows that are not akc.
even though he is very intelligent means nothing in the ring. its all about his physical characteristics.
showing is HARD WORK. it sounds like fun, but its work work work. it takes alot of dedication, discipline, time and effort.
kittythestray shows cats, she would be the best person to ask.
i dont mean to discourage you, i just wanted to be honest.
please keep us up to date. good luck if you pursue it

eta: the point of showing a dog is that you are showing a dog that most meets the breeds/ standards. the reason they do not allow unaltered dogs is because show dogs are often breeding dogs since they are supposed to be the best possible example of a breed

Thanks to everyone who posted

He does have lineage papers, which is how I was able to trace him back. He actually did have an AKC champ as his grandfather. Who knows how true those papers are though? Chat Icon

I don't mind doing smaller shows w/ him and also show him for obedience like we did w/ one of our golden retrievers. We had another golden that we showed in the big time, he was best in show, but he was also from an amazing line of dogs (okachobie...I probably killed the spelling on that one!Chat Icon ). It's a shame though, because according to the AKC's description on the breed, he is pretty good (although he is still a puppy) and has a great stance.Chat Icon

My dad had actually told me to try the smaller shows first anyway, because I wasn't sure about showing him at all. He had said to try it and see how he does.

Re: Anyone show their dog?

I would recommend talking to one of the women @ Blue Ribbon - even if you just call.
They can give you the lowdown on it since they do show their dogs and they train other breeds for show.
