Apartments, Houses and Babies
I was just wondering how everyone is doing it with having a one bedroom apartment or house or condo etc. How are you making room and what are you doing with ordering furniture?
I'm not trying just yet but we have been talking about starting soon but we live in a one bedroom. It has room but just wondering how everyone else does it.
Thanks, Denise

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
We had a one bedroom co-op when we had our son 3 years ago. Our bedroom was so large that we moved our furniture to one side of the room and had the crib and changing table on the other side of the room.
We were there for a year before things started getting tight. Then we moved into our house.

We have a 1 bedroom apt, but are looking for a house. If we have to stay in the apt., the crib will go in our room and the dresser will go in our living room area (we have room)
We only have the dresser and crib though, we kept it so that we didn't have a lot of baby furniture-just in case.

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
I live in a 1 bedroom apt in NYC - which as you can imagine means it's definitely smaller than the 1 bedrooms in most other towns.
We have a 8 month old son - his crib is in our bedroom. I bought a very tall armoire (10 feet tall) from Gothic Cabinet Craft for our bedroom to hold all his stuff.
I spent a lot of time researching on LIF to figure out what toys/items would get the most use and anything I bought - I bought the foldable kind. The highchair, exersaucer, activity mat and baby rocker that I have are all foldable.
It's definitely more time consuming to have to figure out where to put everything but it's still possible. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much. Hubby keeps saying we don't have enough room but we can make room. Just need some help from you guys who have done it or are going to be making due with the space you have.
Thanks again Denise

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
I have a 1 bedroom apartment and so far things have worked out pretty well. It can be a little cramped at times but very managable.
I got rid of alot of clothes and so I could get rid of all of our dressers. I use the dresser/hutch for my clothes and all of Rylans are in the armoire. I was able to keep 2 small thin tall dressers that aren't seen in the picures.I have pics of our bedroom bedroom/nursery
The living room is crowded...but I am able to fit his swing and jumperoo in there.

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
we're in a 1 bedroom apt.... Our bedroom is not too big.... neither is our living or dining rooms.... but our EIK is rather spacious.
The crib is already assembled and in our bedroom. it is next to a window with a deep window sill.... so that is where Scones stuffed animals will be sitting. The crib has a drawer below for extra storage. For the dresser/changing table, we sacrificed 1/2 of our dressing/closet area. We added extra lighting. this works great for us becuase it means we don't have to both wake up with bright light every time Scone needs to be changed.
Since there isn't a lot of room in the living/dining rooms, the packnplay will be at grandma's house, since she offered to babysit when we worked. we will only have a bouncy chair in that room. In the more spacious kitchen, we'll have a highchair, and possibly a swing.
For the stroller, we found this wonderful storage device: over the door stroller hook
It's definitely do-able. Couples in NYC have kids all of the time, and most of them have space issues similar to ours.
oh I should add the most important point: living small is VERY efficient, and manageable.... BUT, you have to emotionally detach yourself from clutter. We purge old clothes and stuff we no longer need at least 2X a year. we also have to avoid paperwork pile-ups. it's all about discipline... however, if you can manage that, it also makes weekly clean-up MUCH easier than a large space with much more stuff... so there are even time benefits to it....

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
we have a 3 bedroom house that is cramped.. we have 2 kids and another on the way so my DD and DS will be sharing so the baby has its own room for a while.. We are looking to move in the next few months to a year the most. We are trying everything to make the most of space we bought Bunk beds and got rid of alot of furniture that wasnt needed.. But even still the kids toys take up the most room.. I think no matter how much room you have you never think its enough.

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
We have a three bedroom house but are looking at 4bedroom houses now: our older DD's share a room, and our little DD has her own room. I always had our babies sleep with us the first several months anyway (paranoia, comfort, etc!), but aside from the cradle, their furniture and gear were in their rooms. We are challenged, now, too!
We are getting rid of our PC armoire and switching to a laptop, and using that space for the changine table/dresser. As for the other stuff... well, these tiny little people have big things, don't they?!? We'll play it by ear! Good luck!!

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
We are going to put the crib in the bedroom, the pack n play in the nook between the kitchen and sitting room. We will get a bouncer and the boppy travel swing. Our kitchen can fit the high chair no problem. We each cleaned out two of our dresser drawers for the baby. It will be tight, but we really want to stay in Park Slope for a while.

Re: Apartments, Houses and Babies
Well i am not ordering anything yet. Everyone said they will help us out when we have a house next year. We have no room from extra things in the one bedroom we have. My husband owns his own business so most of the things we need to keep in the bedroom.
