Misconceptions about IF on TV/movies

I am watching the Friends episode where Monica and Chandler find out they can't conceive on their own.
She is told she has an "inhospitable uterus," (what does that mean?) and Chandler has low motility. Because of their issues their options are
1) surrogacy
2) IUI with donor sperm
3) adoption
This left me. Chat Icon None of it makes any sense to me. I am sure when I first saw the episode I didn't give it a second thought. Now that I know about IF and what things truly mean, I realized how horribly IF is portrayed by TV/movies, even fictional books. The book I am reading right now - the woman was told in her 20's she did not ovulate like a normal woman (hello PCOS) and needed help. Of course at 39 she becomes pregnant by surprise.

It is these portrayals that gives the public all the misconceptoions about IF which then prompts them to say some of the stupid things people say.

It's funny you say that about Friends. I was watching the episode where Phoebe has her SIL and brothers embryos transferred, and goes on later that day to take a HPT and get a BFP. Chat Icon

Oh, and ITA w/ you about how TV and movies portray IF.

Re: Misconceptions about IF on TV/movies

Granted they have to condense months of IF treatments into either a half hour or a one hour program, but the information is usually horribly inaccurate.

That being said, you would be surprised how many people think that IUIs and IVF are the exact same thing and how many people think I had IVF.

I hear you about both of those Friends episodes.

I'm always shouting at the TV with anything relating to IF or pregnancy:

"THAT'S NOT HOW THAT HAPPENS!!"

I told someone that we went through IVF and they asked me if DH was able to bond with the baby since it wasn't his.

One more reason to hate this man:

Rush Limbaugh recently accused the Dixie Chicks of faking infertility "just so they could
write a dumb song about female plumbing."

Re: Misconceptions about IF on TV/movies

I think that Hollywood is irresponsible with its portrayal of IF and even pregnancy, labor and birth in many cases.

Since the Friends instances are the only ones that I'm familiar with, I'll just say that I think the writers/producers of the show probably went to adoption for their storyline b/c it introduced a more comedic opportunity with the white trash/redneck preggo.

I guess what I am trying to say is that - at least with comedy shows - their priority is not on portraying the subject matter with factual accuracy, as much as portraying it in *THE* funniest way possible.

Unfortunately, that is in very stark contrast to the experiences of women who suffer with IF...but I guess that is why you have to be selective about what to watch.

Similarly, I know plenty of women who have gotten upset by how c-sections (emergency or planned) have been portrayed in TV and movies, too.Chat Icon

I was reading the list and was a bit shocked about this one:

Meet our unofficial Infertility Spokespersons. Those in the public spotlight who are brave:
American Idol alum, Clay Aiken and his friend, Jaymes Foster have conceived their child through
"artificial insemination."

When did this happen? I am so clueless. I am always up to date with current events.

Re: Misconceptions about IF on TV/movies

I just finished reading a fiction book where one of the characters is going through IF and the author confused IUI with IVF...I wrote her a letter about how as an author it is her responsibilty to research her subplots before she writes about them. I also blame the editors!
