Omega's

Ive been told that omega 3's are lacking in peoples diets, and that we should be taking them as supplements. I was also told it will enhance the babies develoment. Are they safe to take in addition to the prenatals? Is anyone else taking them?

Re: Omega's

I take them. My doc told me to start taking them along with a prenatal when we started TTC... now I just continue to take them.

Also, there is a ton of food out there that has a boost of Omega 3s because it's a hot item these days...

As always, it's better to get nutrients from foods than from vitamins.

Im a vegetarian so I know they are lacking in my diet. I dont think the prenatals have the recommended daily dosage.

I think mainly fish, which I have been staying away from because
A- Mercury
B- Makes me sick

Re: Omega's

I am a vegetarian too (but I don't eat fish) and I take Nordic Natural vitamins-- they are supposed to have a lemon flavor-- but they still smell a little fishy, even though they have no taste. I just hold my breath and take them.

I don't like the idea of it since it's not veggie-- but, if it's good for the baby the least I can do is take the vitamin.

I also have been eating YoMommy yogurt, which has Omega 3s. You can also get a lot of foods enriched with Omega 3s like pasta (Barilla Plus), breads and cereals like Kashi. If you just walk through the aisles at the supermarket-- a ton of foods will have it-- and it's all over the boxes because there are a ton of other benefits-- not just for pregos.

Re: Omega's

My dr told me NOT to take omega capsules from cvs because of the fish source they may come from..so instead he prescribed me prenate elite, which includes omega/dha and all of the vitamins you need in one pill. I would call your dr, see if you can get this pill or one like it or ask him to prescribe/recommend a safe omega supplement to take along with your prenatals. Good luck and go get some omega!

Re: Omega's

I use Expecta, which is a DHA/Omega 3 capsule that's from a non-fish source. I know they have it at BRU, I buy mine at Wal-mart because it's much cheaper. Chat Icon

Re: Omega's

I now take a prenatal with omega...but when I was taking a prenatal that didnt include omega, I always took one. It's supposed to be great for brain development too.

Re: Omega's

Lots of foods have added Omega or naturally occurring. Some I can think of off the top of my head:

Eggs
Soymilk (Silk fortified)
Natures Own double fiber bread
Total Cranberry cereal

Re: Omega's

FDA studies have shown that omega 3's are important for proper brain development.... It's crutial that you consume enough omega 3's... but also the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 in your diet is important.

most americans eat way too many omega 6's (corn oil, soybean oil..... it's EVERYWHERE). It's especially high in processed foods, becuase the 'cheap oils' are usually high in omega 6's. So, to counteract this, I cook most foods at home using oils lower in 6's.... canola and olive oil.

I then take expecta DHA along with my OTC prenatal. The FDA council that met and discussed omega 3's agreed that the daily intake for pregnant mom's should be somewhere between 300 mg and 1000 mg a day..... and they should also avoid excessive omega 6 consumption.

Becuase of that report, I take 2 expecta a day (2x200mg = 400 mg).

my OB was fine with the OTC prenatal and DHA I was taking when we first met and never changed anything......
