How would I ask that salon to give me a cut where my hair will fall closer to my head? Do they need to thin it? Razor the back? No layers right?

I have THICK wavy hair that grows out from my head. Its always so puffy. I want it to fall closer to my head, at least the length of time between haircuts. I got layers the last time and it was a HUGE mistake! It was so BIG, unless I straightened it. I want to tell them to cut it so it falls close to my head but I am not sure what to ask them for. Does anyone know?
