Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

I so totally failed my 1 hr. glucose which I was shocked by because I never had a glucose problem before. My number was so high they aren't even sending me to do the 3 hr test. They want me to see an endocrinologist so I am going tomorrow to see what's up.

Anyone have or had gestational diabetes? What can I expect? Is it horrible? Will the baby be ok? I'm so upset, I just don't know what to expect. Chat Icon

Re: Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

it's not so bad they put me on a diet that is easy to follow and the insulin is easy to manage It is 3 shots a day that you have to remember to do but its worth it and you'll feel better once on it. If you need to go on insulin liberty medical is cheaper than your local pharmacy

Re: Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

I have gestational Diabetes and when they told me I failed the three hour by two points I cried my eyes out. Honestly it isn't too bad. I control the diabetes with diet and have not had to go on insulin. I do however need to check my blood sugar four times a day which is a pain in the butt. It was also my b-day yesterday and I didn't get to have any cake which bummed me out because I love sweets and now that I can't have it I want it sooooo bad!!

Re: Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

I had GD and it wasn't horrible. I was able to control it with diet. The worst part was having to test my blood 4x a day...and not being able to eat ice cream all the time. The good part was that I only gained 23lbs because I couldn't eat everything in sight. My DD came out perfectly healthy and weighed 8.7 which is pretty normal. Also it went away the day I gave birth Chat Icon

I totally faied the one hr also, my doc is sending me for the 3 hr tomorrow, "just to see how bad it really is" and to "come up with the best plan for monitoring it". From what I understand, the reason it is a problem is because baby is absorbing all the sugar that your body isn't properly breaking down and if it isn't regulated, the baby wll actually get sick from a sort of sugar withdrawal when it is born ~ which is why we have to regulate it now. Two of my friends had it and said the diet was actually excellent. You would be surprised at what you can eat and they did not gain much weight when on it.

Thank you everyone for the responses!! I have my appt. this afternoon with the endocrinologist so I should know more about what I am in for later. I'm just hoping the diet is easy to follow, I am such a picky eater so I'm worried. My biggest concern is insulin shots so hopefully I can avoid that for now. I will keep everyone posted and thanks again!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You will do fine. While I did pass my 3 hour, one of my numbers was somewhat high, so the dr just said it was up to me, but I could meet w/ a nutritionist just to review my diet. I am on bedrest now and probably will not do that since I am restricted as to what I can do with regard to moving around, but a friend of mine who had GD sent me her diet in case I decide to follow it and it is not that bad!

i had it with my first pg, will find out very soon if I get it again.

for me it was tough, the diet, pricking my finger 5x a day and having to take 2 shots of insulin. towards the end, I couldnt do it anymore for me it hurt too much, I had to wait for DH to come home to do it for me.
the good part was I only gained 25lbs.

the baby will be just fine, you will go for more sono's and they check the baby regularly and so will you

Re: Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

I had it with my ds. i was totally surprised when they told me I had it, I thought that if you were a thin person it couldn't affect you.....so I was proved wrong. For me from 7 months on i went to North Shore to the Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors and saw a nurse there who made me keep a food diary, a diary of my levels and test my urine every morning. I went in twice a week also for sonograms and NST. I did not have to go on insulin. I am nervous to see if I will get it again this pregnancy.

Re: Gestational Diabetes.......anyone with info??

I had gestational diabetes. It doesn't matter what health condition you were in before being pregnant.

GD is based soley on you having a placenta ...
From the American Diabetes Website

"We don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but we ave some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin.

Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia."

I failed my 1-hour so badly that they wouldn't even do a 3-hour test.

I started by dieting, then slowly I was introduced to insulin shots and was up to 4 shots a day and high doses by the time I gave birth.

At this point, the doctors are going to monitor you and baby very closely. I had weekly sonograms from week 30-week 38 when I gave birth. They will monitor baby's growth rate as well as blood flow, amniotic fluid levels, and may have you do the 24 hour urine collection (I had to do it twice!).

It is manageable, and you will hopefully get the support you need to manage it.

I was on a 'formula' diet. For example for breakfast I was allowed the following exchange:
1 carb, 1 meat, 1 fat, 1 dairy ... so that would be 1 slice of toast with butter, 1 egg with cheese.
For snack it was 1 fruit, 1 meat ... so that wold be an apple and peanut butter.

It was easy to follow and substitute things in there.

Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me!
