Puppy help

I don't know what to do. Oreo has been sick all day. He started having loose, watery stools since early this morning, before he ate. He ate 1/3 cup of wellness kibble w/ a little innova wet (just enough to barely coat the kibble...to attract him, cause otherwise he does not eat). He would not go before I left for work. He then had an accident in his crate, which he never does. Since then he has had about 8 loose, watery stool. I called the 24 hr vet emergency hospital. They said to try some rice, which we are going to do (it's cooling now on the stove). The horrible thing is to watch him go to his pad, try to make, run off, and then go right back on...you can almost feel the spasmChat Icon .

Then I gave him a fresh bone to chew and his gums are bleeding. Is this really related? When I asked about the teething-loose stool connection the vet I spoke to tonight, said they are not related. I have had him checked for parasites, and does not have any. He was fine yesterday. I'm going to try the rice, but is there anything else I can do? I had some left over meds from the last time he had this problem, and I have been giving it to him to no avail.

Is there a connection to teething and loose stools? He is not lethargic, if anything he was a little hyperactive today. How about frontline? Can that cause it?

Re: Puppy help

I had this happen to my dog a few times, once being when he ate something from outside. Another time he didnt eat for 2 days and he was going like watery stools and going in his cage due to not being able to control it. It seemed to be just a virus and by the third day he started eating a little but all I gave him was a tad of his food with rice to bind him up. Then he was ok. Maybe Oreo just has a lil virus. The tooth bleeding thing, I really am not sure. How old is he, is he done teething?

No he is definitely still teething. He just turned 5 months old this month.

He definitely is hungry. I gave him rice and he gobbled it down. He also ate all his food this morning.

Definitely make sure he is drinking and staying hydrated. I don't really know if Frontline would cause it, but my advice to you would be to get him to the vet as soon as you can. Poor little guy Chat Icon

I can tell you that the bleeding gums really has nothing to do with the other. When Bella was teething, we would find blood on all her toys and at first I almost fainted, but then realized what it was from.

It might be the food, sometimes with puppies, some foods might not agree with their digestive system. I would def try the rice and watch him to make sure she is acting ok and bring him to the vet just to check it out.

This morning I gave him rice again. No BM, but I think he is swallowing whole because he coughed up some of the rice. I really do think his teeth are bothing him, I just don't know if it's related. As far as the water drinking, I feel that it could be better. I gave him some fresh cold water and he has not touched it yet...I'm thinking about getting a medicine dropper if he does not drink (not to be cruel, but I don't want him to dehydrate either).

i will call the vet in 2 hrs.

Re: Puppy help

I think there is something going around.. My good friend just called me to tell me about her maltese. He has had loose stool all week.. In the middle of the night he jumped out of bed and pooped right on the floor. he has never done that.. She had gotten him a shot that week but the Vet said it was not related??????.. The vet said it is a virus.. So after 1 week of this he is finally back to normal.. he was eating fine the whole time as well? I hope your baby feels better Chat Icon

not sure if it's a virus but my dog was throwing up on tuesday, one of her stools was loose but not too bad. It's so sad when they're sick, I hope oreo feels better soon.

Wow, I wonder if it was a virus (or maybe the rice did the trick). Today he seems to be doing better (knock on wood). I gave him a little canned food w/ rice tonight since he has not had a BM yet. I don't want him to get clogged up.
