This is one reason why we won't be naming our kid after DH
DH was named after his father. DH has savings bonds that are due to mature after 30 years-so in about a year or so.
His father received bonds (for what reason I have no idea) in 1997, also mature in 30 years.
My MIL cashed DH's bonds bc she 'thought' they were his father's bonds (again, have no idea why they would cash bonds in so early). They didn't realize what bonds they were cashing because obviously they didn't READ or LOOK AT DATES.
So they are going to give DH his father's bonds of equal value....which mature in 2027.

That is so annoying! I don't think I'd be willing to wait until 2027, can she give you the value of the bonds now since she cashed in DHs already?

She had them at her home. My mom still has mine, I have to get them from her. But my mom has them labeled as mine.
She had them with his original birth certificate etc in their safe, for safe keeping. Well, obviously not that safe!

I'm going to find out, I'm trying to get DH to understand how dumb it was for her to cash ANY of the bonds early.

Obviously not! I recommend getting everything she has since she doesn't seem to be very careful. My Dad gave me all my stuff (bonds, birth certificate, etc.) when I first moved out. I feel better having it and knowing where it is. etc.
I agree with the pp she should give you the $$ not the bonds.

After we were married, I already got the birth certificate etc...but never got the bonds. I'm going to have to somehow ask for all important paperwork of his so I have it (if she has anything else I don't konw about). I don't know what she has, if anything. I know what she doesn't have...the bonds!
Sorry to vent, this is just a little frustrating.

DH finally understand how the bonds work...
He agrees, it is stupid for us to wait till 2027...like around the time our child will graduate HIGH SCHOOL to collect on his father's bonds.
This is just so ridiculous...so he is now going to ask for the face value of HIS bonds, and let his parents worry about the bonds that mature in 2027.
Let me tell you, explaining this was like pulling teeth!

I'm glad you were able to explain the bonds to DH. Hopefully your MIL will understand as well.
