Genetic Testing

I am going to LIJ tomorrow for genetic testing. They advised it as a precaution because my mother is Jewish. What information should I bring with me? What should I expect?

Re: Genetic Testing

That's not really genetic testing...it's genetic screening.
They will ask you for family information and do a blood work up on you - checking to see if you are a carrier for certain things that run in Jewish and/or Middle Eastern nations.

Do you know what sorts of family information they ask? I want to make sure I ask my parents everything I need to know before my visit Chat Icon

Re: Genetic Testing

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that genetic disorders (such as Tay Sachs) that are associated with Eastern European Jews are only an issue if both parents have this heritage (meaning you and your DH). I come from a family of Ashkenazi Jews, but DH is not Jewish, so we did not go through any testing.

I will be VERY annoyed if I am going to this when I don't have to - I have enough appointments this week to have to deal with. My DH is not Jewish (He's an Italian Catholic), so now I'm wondering if it's really necessary. Maybe I should put a call into the doctor's office....

Don't get annoyed there are other things they test for - Fragile X, Cystic Fibrosis and there is a test for those of Italian/Mediterrean heritage, I can't think of the name

Usually when you're dr wants something done, there's a valid reason

Re: Genetic Testing

No, there are other diseases they screen for that have common carriers with other heritages.

It basically goes like this - they take blood and screen it for a whole SLEW of genetic diseases. If your tests run positive for any genetic disease, then they will test your DH for THOSE diseases only.

Re: Genetic Testing

I had to go and get testing done for fragile x and cystic fibrosis (which cover a ton of tests underneath them in the same bloodwork), but they told me they HAD to be done at LI-IVF b/c they went thru Genzyme. I would put in a call.

ETA: did you look in your IVF orientation class folder? there were some pamphlets about fragile-x, cystic fibrosis, and I forget the title, but something about jewish testing... maybe that will give you a heads up as to what to expect. I didn't read the jewish one as neither of us are, however I read the other 2...HTH!

Re: Genetic Testing

Yeah, if DH is not Jewish, then there is no reason to run the Jewish panel. But, they should run for CF and the sort of stuff that can be with everyone. I had that testing done, it was the first thing my gyn/oby did. Turns out I had tested pos for 2 of the Jewish ones and CF. Luckily, DH (who is also Jewish) tested negative on everything. Man he's clean as a whistle, its all me. Seriously, I was so surprised to find out that I had this in my DNA. And in some weird way it was the first connection I ever felt to my Eastern Jewish background (not that its a good one, but still it was there).

Re: Genetic Testing

The Italian one is Thalisimea and I am lucky enough to carry that trait... my DH has the Sickle Cell C trait... so we had to do genetic testing and will have to do lots of testing once we are prego to make sure the traits to mix.

Re: Genetic Testing

I suggest you go, I thought it was very informative. Tay Sachs is also prevelant in French Canadians, which I had no idea. My husband is, so they tested us for it along with several other. I think it's just good to know what possibilities are out there for your future.

Re: Genetic Testing

I had my testing done today. They tested for a few different diseases, and I was also tested previously for fragile-x and CF. They aren't too concerned because there is no history of disease, and I am only 1/2 Jewish and my husband is not Jewish. Another thing off the check list Chat Icon
