Spinoff to Truth About Pet Food
I have been looking for an alternative to feed my mini doxie. I see that Science Diet offers the Nature's Best line, which is supposed to be a 'natural dog food.' Since I have been feeding Leo Science Diet all along, I figured if this is a true switch to better food for him, it may not upset his stomach and I may not have issues with him eating it at all.
Please look at these ingredients and tell me if there are any of the bad things that were mentioned in the article that would make this dog food not a better choice. TIA!!
Ingredients: Chicken, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Wheat, Cracked Pearled Barley, Soybean Meal, Chicken Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Whole Grain Oats, Apples, Cranberries, Soybean Oil, Peas, Carrots, Dried Beet Pulp, Iodized Salt, Flaxseed, Broccoli, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract. Guaranteed Analysis:

Re: Spinoff to Truth About Pet Food
Since I am bored at work (although there is work I could be doing ) I "rated" the food using the LINK that was given in the original article. Now, I am not guaranteeing the accuracy of the calculations but I did my best!!
Start with 100 subtract 2 for having soybean meal and soybean oil (#11) subtract 3 for having wheat (#13) subtract 1 for having iodized salt (#15)
you now have 94....now for the bonus'
start with 94 add 3 for having fruit (#5) add 3 for having veggies (#6) add 2 for having barley (#8) add 1 for having oats (#10)
your total is 103 ! ! The site says "100+ = A+ 94-100=A 86-93 = B 76-85 = C 75 or lower= Failed"
So according to their rating system, this food gets an A+ ! ! !

Re: Spinoff to Truth About Pet Food
I think it would be better if the Brown Rice wasn't the 2nd ingredient. And not sure but that Soybean Meal, sounds like a filler. And Grain isn't the best. Chicken Meal should have been number 2 on the list.

Re: Spinoff to Truth About Pet Food
Ash is very bad for dogs. Not all dogs/animals can eliminate it properly and it can cause severe digestive issues that can lead to other afflictions.
Try foods that are Holistic rather than "natural".
