Lack of protein

Since I've found out that I'm pregnant I haven't been able to eat any meat (beef, poulty, etc). I'd eat fish but not right now with the red tide going on.

Does anyone have an suggestions on what I can do to add protein to my diet? I do eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but it gets boring. Plus one sandwich isn't enough protein.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Lack of protein

Milk, eggs, cottage cheese, regular cheese are all good sources of protein.

You could also try making milkshakes/smoothies and adding peanut butter to up the protein.

Re: Lack of protein

I recall eggs also being rather difficult to choke down when I had my food aversions... right along with meat and most veggies.

I ate cottage cheese, yogurt, lots of fruit, and drank water... if you can manage to eat some beans (kidney, black beans... what ever you can tolerate) or nuts that would be great... but frankly, a lot of us are rather malnourished during that Chat Icon phase, and our babies were still ok...

just do your best and eat whatever you think you can tolerate.... and avoid too many empty calories (sugary drinks / cookies) Chat Icon

Re: Lack of protein

I'm a vegetarian and understand that you do have to search out protein options, but once you find them it is easy. I'm used to cooking with beans and tofu/tempeh. There are great products by morningstar farms as meat replacements...don't expect them to taste like meat but you can use them in recipes that call for meat. Yogurt, cottage cheese, and nuts are great snacks. If you feel up to it a carnation instant breakfast drink isn't bad. Smoothies made with soymilk are good too. Would you eat soymilk in cereal? Try keeping protein counts for a few days and logging what you are eating so you can see what to add and when.

Yes, I would use soymilk. I don't know how I feel about the meat replacements. Even that doesn't appeal to me Chat Icon

These are all great though. I'm definitely going to add more cheese and may be even an egg in the morning.

Thank you.

I've heard that too... becuase soybeans (and flax seed/flax oil) have a lot of phytoestrogens... could mess with our hormones...

one should know about fermented versus unfermented soy intake. I've spoken with doctors in various specialties and nutritionists. When you have this diet and are educated about your intake, as well as reviewed the related literature, you can determine what is fact vs. unfounded, what applies to you, what is healthy for you, etc.

ETA: if you diet changes in terms of animal proteins you may need to look into/ask you doctor about B vitamin supplements, particularly if you iron looks low as it can be related.

Re: Lack of protein

I personally would be Chat Icon from lentil soup or anything garlic-ish during the first trimester...

I suggest you wander the supermarket isles searching for something proteinaceous that doesn't turn you off.....
