Question about Bideawee

Are they really a no-kill?? I ask b/c my mom had to bring her dog there. quick back story: it was my brother's dog (brother is 22) and he wasn't taking care of or treating the dog right. My mom was trying the best she could to take care of "Jake" but she works 2 jobs and one of them she has night meetings 2-3 times a week, and she didn't know what else to do.

I love Jake, but live in an apartment with DH and DD and we can't take him. He's a hound mix (so he's pretty big, about 60-70 lbs if I had to guess), and he needs to be able to run around! My mom found out that my brother wasn't taking him to the vet like he should have, so I know he's not up to date on his shots. Will bideawee update him and have him for adoption, or will they put him down because of him not being up to date? I hate to think of what might happen to him. He's about 9 years old, does that make a difference?

He's such a sweet dog, my 9yo DD loves him so much (I still haven't figured out how to tell her) He is definatly going to be missed but my mom thought that this would be best for him.

Sorry for the ramble, I just want to know if anyone knows about Bideawee and has an opinion if Jake is going to be okay....

TIA
**Pam**

Re: Question about Bideawee

As I understand it they are definitely a non-kill shelter.

Additionally, most shelters especially those that are non-kill will update the dog on all his vaccinations before he is adopted.

Re: Question about Bideawee

wow... a while back i had an issue with my dog and we called them for advice, i was told that he would definitely be euthanized if he wasn't re-adopted. but he had a biting issue, maybe that was the difference?

i am sure it was. When i used to volunteer at a shelter, they normally wouldnt adopt out an agressive dog unless they coupld place it in the specific home that it would be ok with. Like if the dog doesnt like children they will place it in an adults only home , etc

Re: Question about Bideawee

I've always heard that BideAWee is a kill shelter....the only no-kill shelters that I know of on Long Island are Little Shelter and the Freeport Shelter on Ryder Ave.

I take it back, I just read their mission statement and it says they never euthanize an animal unless it is incurably ill and suffering!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes definitely- and I was so impressed with them too when we went there.
They had a special section just for cats and the cats were all hanging out in this kitty lounge type area. They had couches for them to lay on, scratching posts, TVs on with videos of birds flying around... I swear those cats lived better than me! Chat Icon
