? for plus sized mommies-to-be
Weight gain - how are we all doing? And does anyone have tips on how to maintain a healthy gain while not going overboard?
I'm only 6.5 weeks along and I've gained A LOT already - 10 lbs!!! I'm eating more, but I also naturally retain a lot so I know that most of it's water weight, but it's still killing me (I was on a prescription diuretic, but had to go off when I got my BFP).
Anyways, I was at my max weight ever & wanted to lose 20+ lbs. before I got pregnant, but lo & behold I actually got preg the 1st month of trying! I know that I'm VERY lucky & I'm truly, TRULY grateful for it, but it's 6 weeks & having not lost that weight, I'm already feeling uncomfortable & huge Please help! I'm going to decrease my salt intake, but can you all please share your tips/ideas on how gain weight in a healthy manner & not go overboard? TIA!

I'm 21 weeks, and have gained 11 lbs so far.
Every person is different, you'll probably go up and down in weight throughout the pregnancy.
Try eating small snacks thoughout the day of veggies and fruits. Hopefully that will kick your metabolism into high gear.

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I gained 5 lbs right away, but haven't gained anything since.
Up until about 9 weeks I was constantly queasy, so I chomped on saltines a lot - I think that was a big part of my intiial gain, now that I am starting to feel better I just try to eat as healthyfully as I can. I tend to graze a lot from breakfast until about 2PM - I bring veggies, fruit, LF yogurt, lean protein with me to work. I generally don't eat after dinner (because I have been asleep by 9PM lately)
I do drink tons of water, so that helps also.
I had gained about 10 lbs before getting pregnant so I was feeling pretty bloated, fat and nasty - but I have decided at this point the only thing I can do it accept it and move on from here. There is no going back now, so I am just trying to eat as well as I can.
Don't stress yourself out about it, your body will gain what it wants, just try to feed it what it needs and you will be fine.

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I have actually lost about 8-9lbs in the past 2 months since my very first doc appt. I am now 12w3d. My doctor does not seem concerned as he has not mentioned anything to me about it. But I plan to discuss it with him at my next appt because I am getting concerned.
Normally when women lose weight in the 1st trimester it is due to severe morning sickness, but I have not had any morning sickness, just a lot of nausea. I have thown up maybe 2x so far..... I feel like I am not eating enough. I usually have a very good appetite (hence why I am plus sized to begin with), but my apetite has been non existing since my BFP. And when I do feel hungry, I have no idea what to eat. Everything makes my stomach turn..... My DH get annoyed with me sometimes, because I can never figureout what I want to eat for dinner....
There have been times where I have gone many hours with out eating because I am not hungry & I just forget. Then I feel like I am starving my baby when I realize that I have not eaten in 6-7 hours..... I am concerned that my baby is not getting the nutrition that it needs even though I am taking my vitamins. It has come to the point where I have to try to force something down just for the sake of make sure I eat SOMETHING whether I enjoy it or not. I hope this is just a 1st trimester issue for me & that I will have better eating habits in the 2nd trimester.
I go back to the doc on 6/20 & I hope to have better eating habits by then or to have gained a few lbs back.

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I am 11 weeks and I've only gained 3 lbs. so far.
I think it's because I've been dealing with nausea, and it's really a chore to eat (for the first time in my life--I didn't get fat by THINKING about food).
I'm hoping to be able to keep the gain to no more than 25 lbs. but hey...this is the real world, right?

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I'm 22 weeks... as of my 19 week weigh-in, I gained a total of 1 lb. (I lost 5 lbs in my first trimester becuase of hideous food aversions, and re-gained 6 as of the last appt).
I only got a slightly larger appetite in the last couple weeks. I never had the munchies, and still eat 2 meals a day (now + 1 snack). I attribute the 6 lbs (which happened in one month!) to a craving for ice tea needless to say, I did NOT buy another container after that!
Since then, I've been trying to limit empty calories, and instead cook everything myself and avoid decadent foods...

I am 37 weeks and I have only gained 12lbs. I have just been eating a lot healthier altogether. Try to avoid salty and sweet items. Eat more veggies and healthy snacks. To be honest, I am going to use a lot of these lessons for after the baby is born so I can lose weight.

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I am 14 weeks and was just telling hubby that I am really uncomfy too...I was weighed in today and was 4 lbs less than a week and a half ago (go figure) I only gained 4 lbs to begin with so now I am back to the weight I was when I got BFP but I failed my glucose and was put on insulin and I am eating just as much but better foods choices so I guess that is what did it IDK

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
Thanks so much for all of your advice ladies!
I think that I found out what's making my bloating worse yesterday - my frozen Lean Cuisine & WW meals are FULL of sodium!! I had a "duh!" moment I had something else for lunch instead & vigilantly watched my sodium intake all day & believe it or not lost 3 lbs. of the water weight already...so I think that's key for me. I really need to be extra vigilant about my sodium intake. I'm also going to take all of your advice and:
1) Munch on fruit & veggie snacks all day at work - they're not just for meals any more!
2) Limit my empty calories & have my DH pay more attention to what he's feeding me when he cooks
3) Try to avoid sweets. This one's going to be hard - I have no self-control when it comes to sweets!
And finally...
4) Take Jeannine/Nina's advice and work towards just accepting my weight & moving on. If I can slow down the increase by using the tips above it will be A LOT easier, though!!!
Thanks again ladies!!

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
At 13 weeks I hadn't gained any weight yet. When I go on June 9 though (17 weeks) I think that might be another story. I have been VERY hungry lately.

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
I'm only 6 weeks, but def. plus sized. I've only gained 2 lbs (went to a specialist on Thursday). I haven't been to my ob/gyn yet (that's Monday, can't wait).
I'm trying to drink an insane amount of water. I really don't want to gain much weight, but if I do, I do. We'll see what the dr says.
I haven't had MS and I'm hungry all the time (GRR). I'm really trying to eat more fruits & veggies. Luckily I LOVE SALAD so I've been having a salad every single night before dinner (so I don't go for seconds).

Re: ? for plus sized mommies-to-be
At 40 + weeks, I gained a total of 14 lbs for the entire pregnancy. I lost 7 in the beginning with MS, gained it plus another 7 back.
