just registered with CBR for cord blood collection
AND.... for once in my life, I was given a 'medical professional discount' of $750 (I'm an NIH drug abuse researcher)
Life is good..... finally my edumacation gave me a little freebee
Also, it's one less big thing on the paperwork pile that needs to be done prior to Crouton's arrival......

Congrats on registering and for the discount! Sweet!! May I ask why you chose CBR over Viacord. I am trying to decide which one to go with. TIA!

Re: just registered with CBR for cord blood collection
Sure... this was NOT my revelation.... it was a shrewd friend of mine's...
Viacord stores it's samples in hebron kentucky, which is super close to the ohio river (and creates huge floods periodically)
CBR stores its samples in arizona... no earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, obviously no floods... It's much safer in the long run.
brilliant observation she had... That's why we chose CBR. Otherwise, viacord and CBR are super close with reputation, technology, # of transplants, and costs.
If you decide to go to them and haven't received a referal from a friend, FM me your email, and I'll send you a CBR referal... (It will give Crouton a free year of storage )

Re: just registered with CBR for cord blood collection
no no no... I'm certain you can do it somehow.... mainly because we're by no means wealthy and WE can do it.... (DH is still in grad school). The initial cost (almost $2k) sounds totally unaffordable, BUT... most companies have payment options... you can opt to stretch payments for 6 months to a year (without any interest), OR you can have payments stretched out over YEARs as low as $50/month.
Then, there's an annual storage fee of $125 (the cost doesn't increase for at least 15-20 years, depending upon the company). That's not too much of an annual pinch.... just $10/month.
Definitely look into banking the blood with someone and research discounts and payment options. I bet you CAN afford it when you look into it.
then, with most companies, for every recommendation you send to a friend, you will get a free year of storage.... that will cut costs even more.
My friend (another medical researcher) said it best: no one can afford NOT to bank the cord blood. Right now there are 60 diseases or so that can be treated... but our children will (God willing) be alive 70+ years... by then most common diseases will be treatable! (ex. heart disease)
because I know just how valuable those little cells are, I'll sell my car before pitching that blood......

Thanks for the insight. If I go with CBR I will definitely shoot you an FM!
