Going for ultrascreen today
Thanks ladies for dealing with all my questions about the ultrascreen. I went in to my doctor's office this morning to re-do my last bloodwork because of the tech's mess up and got a chance to briefly talk to my doctor asking her how/why she recommends to get an ultrascreen or not. Apparently in CT there are not enough trained doctors/techs to offer it to the large majority of pregnant women so if you are not a higher risk or indicate other reasons for offering it, they offer the genetic bloodwork at 16 weeks. But she said if I wanted to opt to do it we certainly could. However, TODAY is the absolute last day they can do it (13w6d) so they called around fit me in for 3pm today.
Now I'm freaking out and nervous! I'm sure everything will be okay and I feel better knowing that I'm doing my due diligence to find out any info that may help with my baby's future care.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Couple of questions: -Am I allowed to eat before I go or am I supposed to fast? -Will they tell me results right away or do I have to wait? -Do they do bloodwork today too or does this still get done at 16 weeks?
I know these are ?'s for my doc but it was a whirlwind today and the office was soooo busy I was just glad I got to speak to her for the 3 minutes that I did (considering I didn't have an appt).

-Am I allowed to eat before I go or am I supposed to fast? You are allowed to eat...no need to fast at all. -Will they tell me results right away or do I have to wait? You have to wait for the bloodwork to come back, your doctor will get the results. -Do they do bloodwork today too or does this still get done at 16 weeks? You should get the bloodwork AND the sonogram today. They use both to determine the results.

first of all relax!! an ultrascreen is nothing mor than a sono and a finger prick - seriously, it's easy
you definitely don't think you need to fast. some places want you to have a full bladder to make the measurements easier to take, but you can ask about that when you get to your appointment.
unless it's done by a dr, i don't think they will tell you the results right away - sono techs are generally not qualified to do anything more than take measurements. this is just the general rule, every office is different.
the ultrascreen bloodwork is done at 12 weeks and the AFP is done at 16 weeks - two different tests that look for similar stuff at different points in your pregnancy.
ENJOY yourself today - the sono at that age is amazing!!
