With roughly 6 billion people currently on the planet, that means that this has happened to
roughly 12 thousand people!  (and that's not counting the billions of people who have died years ago...)

Reminds me of the Stephen King book The Dark Half.
From an article about the book:
" Around the same time he begins to get excruciating headaches, which culminate in a convulsion. Surgery reveals something startling - first an eye, then other small fragments of an incompletely absorbed twin that's lodged in his brain.
