Another Topic About Gas Consumption-Mass Transit

I've noticed lately that ridership has gone up on the LIRR. I take the 7:01 or 7:10 from Bethpage in the am and the 6:21 or 6:53 home. Both trains lately are packed! If I don't get there before the train pulls in there are no seats and people are standing..no middle seats, no nothing.

On Wednesdays its worse because matinee people who used to drive are taking the train. Whole families..say 6 people are getting on the train.

Anyone else notice this?

DH takes the train now b/c he rides for free (he is in the NYPD) to save gas....it saves us a few hundred a month

ETA: he actually found he liked it better than sitting in traffic and dealing with crazy drivers

I have seen how crowded that Ronkonkoma line gets in the evening and it makes me glad I take the Babylon line.

Ridership is definitely up.

Totally agree. I used to drive in every day. Had a monthly parking spot in Manhattan too.

I thought I would hate the LIRR but I actually welcome it. I can get so much done on the train. Catch up with all my websites on my phone.

The traffic to get out of the city and get through queens was real annoying.

Re: Another Topic About Gas Consumption-Mass Transit

I take the A train from Queens to Chambers Street everyday and then the PATH to Jersey City......it seems a little more crowded lately, but its usually pretty tight on the A train anyway. it makes me think if the congestion pricing would've went through, mass transit would really need to be bailed out!! they need to add more train routes or something, its just too overcrowded as it is. I wish i could just work from home!! Chat Icon

OMG YES!! Its unbearable and you can tell by all the non-monthly ticket holders. I've noticed more weeklys pop up. GRRR, while I'm happy people are saving money, it urks me because its so much more crowded, and its not even the summer yet. Just wait for Summer Fridays (GRRRR!!!!!)

It's been like that on the Long Beach line too... and the subways have been a disaster in the city lately. Packed and delayed...ugh!

I actually haven't noticed a difference. Maybe because i take a pretty early train in (6:24) and an early one home (4:24)?

I've noticed the early trains too but I only did that one day so maybe it was a fluke.

Most people who have to be at work by 8-8:30 would take the 7:01 or the 7:10 out of Bethpage..I think that would be the majority of extra riders.

The platform is way more packed too. I've noticed it mostly just this week.

I know I read somewhere that ridership is up. There aren't enough trains. I wonder what the LIRR is doing about it. They are going to have to add trains and routes. Going through Jamaica is getting nuts too..it takes 15 minutes just to get to Jamaica and then another 10 minutes to get past it.

There isn't much they can do about Jamacia, especially after that last derailment. If anything they will be going even slower through the station.

Re: Another Topic About Gas Consumption-Mass Transit

I'm sure if ridership stays up, they will add more trains. At this point, it may just be a trend and they have to make sure it isn't before adding trains to the schedule.

Personally, I'd rather see more people on the train. If anything, it shows the gas companies that there are alternative sources of transportation and people are willing to use them.

I have noticed it as well. I've been standing with a lot more people than I have in the past while waiting for the train and they are there every day (I'm on NJ transit but, in NY state).

The parking lot is a lot more full now as well than it used to be.

some trains don't need to go through Jamaica..the routes can be diverted. I hope this can happen with more trains.

I need more express trains to Bethpage and more trains in general. That's just my personal wish list.
