Organic question......

I've seen a statement on packages of chicken and pork that it is against FDA rules to have hormones and steriods in the meat. So, if that's the case, what's the difference between buying regular chicken and organic? Just curious because organic is like double the price, you know? Is it the preservatives?

I think for organic meats most of them are also raised humanely. For ex chicken allowed to free range not stuffed in cages on top of each other.

This isn't exactly true.

Organic doesn't mean free range, and free range doesn't have a standard, like 5 sq ft per chicken.

Also, organic and free range don't necessarily include grass fed or humanely raised. PETA has a stamp that you'll see on eggs that have been humanely raised.

It's confusing, I'm still sorting it all out myself. Chat Icon

Re: Organic question......

Organic means that the meats are free of antibiotics, preservatives, and the animals are also fed organically. That means they are fed food that has not been treated with pesticides or any other chemicals. When the chickens aren't kept in cages it will say "free range" on the packaging. Organic farmers may have free range animals but that isn't a requirement for the meat or eggs to be organic.

Re: Organic question......

It may depend on the brand...but if it has the United States Department of Agdriculture organic seal on it it has to meet certain requiremnts:

http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/ams.fetchTemplateData.do?template=TemplateA&navID=NationalOrganicProgram&leftNav=NationalOrganicProgram&page=NOPNationalOrganicProgramHome&acct=nop

- Reflect National Organic Standards Board recommendations regarding which substances used in production and processing are allowed or prohibited

-Prohibit the use of irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in organic production

-Prohibit antibiotic and synthetic hormone use in organic meat and poultry

-Require 100% organic feed for organic livestock
