Brewster, NY

Anyone live in Brewster (Putnam County?).

We are thinking about moving there and I was curious about the schools and travel time to Long Island (since my family will be staying there.)

it's a little over two hours away from Long Island...sometimes my sister will take the train from the city to Brewster, and then I'll pick her up there to go to my aunt's in new fairfield, CT....it's maybe 20 minutes north of Danbury/Newfair field area....the part of it that I've seen main street, down by the railroad, not a great area, it is not really too built up, but I don't know about the residential area....

Not too sure about Brewster proper, but I do know people who live closeby in Carmel and Mahopac and just love it! Its beautiful, they are happy with the schools but although they don't use the Metro North I have heard that there is a wait list for parking permits I would check into that, not sure what the alternatives would be.

I grew up in New Fairfield, CT, just over the border from Brewster. I have a LOT of love for the area, so if you have questions I'm happy to answer.

Personally, I prefer the Metro Danbury Area to Putnam County - Everyone who lives in Putnam County goes to Danbury for shopping, etc. anyway. I'm biased, but I think the schools are better on the CT side too.

Travel Time to LI is roughly 90-120 minutes, depending on Traffic. It was about 90 miles from my house in New Fairfield to where we lived in East Meadow.

I live in Brewster. We love it here- it's very different from LI- more spread out, kinda-sorta rural but all the important things are fairly close.

The school system is quite small- two elementary schools, one intermediate (grades 4 and 5 I believe), 1 middle and one high school. The schools in Putnam in general are very good.

The village itself is kind of run down and with the exception of a little coffee house that I like there's not much there. There are also issues with day laborers- similar to the issue in Farmingville. Recently a drunk guy was found outside one of the elementary schools so the issue is getting a lot of attention again. But chances are, you'll end up living away from the village- there's Brewster Heights, Drewville Heights, Tonetta Lake and a lot of other neighborhoods. Brewster and the town of Southeast (which is where I live even though my addy is Brewster) is really spread out. There are two Metro North stops and the Southeast one is better- lots of parking.

There's very little shopping but there is no tax in Danbury on clothes and that's where the mall is.

It takes us about 1.5 hours to get to my parents' in Levittown.
