Anyone's DH in construction?
Anyone concerned with the economy and real estate issues that their jobs will be affected?
DH is a project manager for big projects in the city - I'm thinking that won't REALLY be afected too badly
but his job was sending him to classes at NYU, and they just told him they are not sure if he'll be able to go this semester because of financial issues. This si the 1st time they ever indicated anything like that and I'm getting concerned....

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
Mine tends to do work for the very, very rich in Manhattan, Brooklyn and pretty exclusive neighborhoods on Long Island. The kind of work he does for the most part (besides smaller, fill-in jobs here and there for "extra" $$$), tends to be for people who have a lot of disposable income anyways.

I wonder if our DH's know each other? Only DH doesn't do residential - only retail, stores, high rises, etc...

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
I am in construction actually, Project Manager. I work in the affordable housing industry, so business is great. The only issues we are having is work stoppages due to the building collapse and crane incidents..

Mine does too in the Hamptons. He has 2 GINORMOUS projects in the next few months among his other smaller ones. We have become more aware of what we spend our money on and have been saving more but as DH puts it "when they stop spending their money, you know the economy is in trouble"

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
My dad had his own business for 25 years and has been out of work for 5 months now.
He had 2 partners and they've dissolved the business that my father worked so hard to build - it breaks my heart.
Times are tough..........

My co-worker's husband is a also a local 3 electrician (for over 15 years) and he is also worried. He's doing a lot of side work and they have put themselves on "austerity."

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
My Dh is a PM, his company does new construction in the 10 million and up range..no slow down in that market and the europeans are buying up the new houses as fast as they can build them. I am VERY grateful that DH networked himself into the position he's in. We ran a small home improvement business for years and most of our friends/other contractors still working for "regular people" are hurting. A few of them sold their homes & moved south.

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
Yes, a lot of businesses are NOT making their numbers.
I know half a dozen professionals with advanced degrees (mostly in banking and finance) that have been out of work for 4-8 months.
While it's not official, because the numbers have not come out, we are in a high inflationary period... many types of businesses are hurting. The first thing they cut back on is growth/expansion because they are not making the profits they used to with the amount of stores/offices they currently have.
For us as individuals, the record price of crude oil, is causing record prices in all areas where crude oil is a component of production, so your cost to live... basically, getting by, is going up. Your salary buys less and doesn't go as far.
Take it from this Economics teacher Save, save, save... you won't get the interest rates you once had but you'll have that cushion incase something does happen to his job. IDEALLY, you should have 6 months of bills saved.

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
My husband is an electrician with Local 25. There are A LOT of men out of work. As an apprentice he was almost 'guaranteed' work while he was in school. But guess what? He graduates this month. Know what that means? That means he goes to the bottom of a list of 400+ men that are waiting for work.
Yeah - it's worrisome. But I am sure we will pull through just fine. And so will you and your DH!

my husband is local 3 also- he's with Forest Electric- what shop does yours work for?
DH has been in this union for 10 years and he's worried. Ever since he became a Journeyman 3 yrs ago we've had to deal w/ furlough.....he's on it right now- til June 2nd. so far this year he's had to do 5 weeks- and last year was 10 weeks! its not easy b/c it depletes his B fund.....his feeling is that unions are not as strong as they used to be. Companies hire non-union all the time now.

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
My DH is a contractor and he has been very busy and is currently booked until August. He doesn't do new construction, it's all homes, offices, etc. I think new construction has slowed down. People don't have money to buy new homes, so they renovate their old ones.

Re: Anyone's DH in construction?
My DH does construction on the side. He has been pretty busy lately, and it is probably due to the fact that people are not buying new homes, they are just renovating their current homes.
