How much do you tip...

When you go to the car wash?

I guess it depends on the type of car wash you go to but I'm asking about the ones where it is just one person working on your car after it is pulled out of that loud tunnel area where it is washed.

Re: How much do you tip...

I usually give them $5 when I get the full service- the one where they vacuum, wash windows, shine the tires and rims etc.
I always feel bad for them- especially when it's cold out- they work so hard.

Re: How much do you tip...

It really depends on how much they work on the car. Anywhere from $2-5.

There are guys that will wipe down your car real quickly, vacuum your rugs, and you are on your way in the matter of seconds.

Then there are guys that REALLY do a number on your car cleaning it up. Some guys literally take 10+ minutes cleaning the car. You sit down while they take their time working on your car.

I'll give anybody that cleans inbetween the spokes on my wheels an automatic $5 because that's the hardest part of the car to clean. A lot of guys won't do this and I usually have to point it out. But what's the point of getting a cash wash when your wheels are still dirty? And the wheels never get perfectly cleaned just going through the wash, the guys have to clean these by hand afterwards.

Re: How much do you tip...

The car wash I usually go to has separate tips for the guys in the back and the front.

The guys in the back vacuum and the guy upfront usually does all the drying, tires, cleaning the inside, etc..

I usually do like $2-3 for the guys in the back and $5 for the guys in the front.

That's for a Honda Civic.

my husband's family owns a car wash - i was asking b/c he always tries to "guess" what the average tip is - so, instead of guessing - i figured i would ask on here to get an idea.

now, for his car wash - where you go might be different - 20-25 bucks is more than their full service - it is actually an "ultra" wash - full service at their place is like 15 plus tax. i guess their prices are pretty good then? if you are saying that your place charges like 20-25 for full service.

but then again my DH's places "ultra" could be someone else's full service - and it is a difference in the name - you never know.

you are right - the work the person taking care of the car does really doesn't change much between a full to an ultra - the highest wash. he basically does all the same stuff inside and out in terms of drying, wiping, cleaning, etc -- the only difference is the highest wash adds the tire shine -- but either way they still clean the tires, rims, etc in and out -- they just add shine for look on the highest wash. so, it really doesn't matter the "service" in terms of what they have to do.

instead of trying to guesstimate, why doesn't your DH just ask the guys how much the customers usually tip?

$5 - $10 depending on the wash. The King of Clean in Bohemia had guys that take their time and do the right thing. Especially in the colder months I give them more.

If they rush it (and it's not the middle of winter and freezing out), then $3. If not, then $5 because there are usually aklot of guys too. But I definitely tip the guy doing my wheels $5. I hate dirty rims and it makes me so mad when they leave them.

every place runs a little different so that could very well be at your place - but at my DH's they get paid the wage that a waiter or waitress gets paid and then the rest is tip money.

aww - it's ok - you didn't realize. i've done that before with tons of things and then i felt so bad afterwards but if you don't know - you don't know.

they have to pay to run all of the machines which is probably the biggest bill b/c to run those huge machines costs a lot -- then, they have maintainence on those machines that LOVE to break a lot lol b/c they run so much, so hard, all the time. besides that - all of the products that go on the car - especially a good car wash will use really high end products for soap, wax, etc. DH's car wash has a teflon system so if you get that wash it actually coats your car with teflon and it keeps it from getting dirty longer -- aside from that is just paying all the guys - between the front and the back there could be anywhere from 70-80 guys on the lot b/c they have to keep the customers happy by getting their cars done as fast as possible - especially in the morning or evening when people are getting their cars washed before work or before they go home.

Oh ok.

Shouldn't there be some kind of consistency? I was under the impression that all car washes paid an hourly salary. I mean I would be a little angry if I tipped a waitress/waiter 15-20% and he / she got an hourly wage. Most people know to tip a waiter/waitress b/c of the hourly thing, but not everyone knows about tipping at a car wash. I've never heard of this before.

Ok now I am going to crawl back under my rock. Chat Icon
