Any Rottie Mommies Out There?

I was wondering if anyone has had "hot spot" issues with their Rotties?

TIA

We don't have a rottie, but I just wanted to welcome you to the boards and say that I am a fan of rotties!! Chat Icon I think they're very cute dogs. Chat Icon

As for the "hot spot" issue, my pit mix, Arnold had a couple of them. The shelter we got him from said it was most likely mange, but the vet referred to it as alopecia. I'm not sure if they're one and the same but nonetheless, he put Arnold on a steroid/anti-hystamine combo and it seems to have cleared them up.

Thanks for the welcomeChat Icon Nice to meet someone with another misunderstood breed.
Its very strange, Cyrus gets them around the same time every year. We put him on medication and it goes away but its soo annoying. I feel bad for him. This time its right under his chin and he is constantly rubbing his chin on his paw and it keeps irritating it. I just dont like to put him on medicine all the time. Our vet told us last year that it was a staph (sp) infection. We think that happend from when he was bit by another dog and had to go to the emergency vet.

.

Maybe there is a topical cream that you can use instead of giving your dog meds all the time? And welcome to LIF Chat Icon

Re: Any Rottie Mommies Out There?

My friend has a rottie and she gets "hot spots" all the time. She uses a cream on the spots (I think)...I will double check with her.

I had a Doberman years ago and he used to get hot spots on his feet. I would spray them with bitter apple when he started licking them. If it's not in a spot where the dog licks though, the bitter apple is pointless.Chat Icon

Oh you're very welcome! There are a few of us on the board with pits and pit mixes, I'm not sure if anyone has a rottie, though.

As for the hot spot, if your vet thought the last one was from a staph infection, this time it either could be the same thing or it could be completely different.

I don't know where you live, but there is a vet at LI Veterinary, her name is Dr. Panich. She's one of the best vets out there dealing with skin issues on dogs. They're located in Plainview. You may want to take Cyrus there and see her.

it's so weird that you guys posted this - i have the exact same issue with my chow/german shepherd mix! he gets "hot spots" every year - dr. panich told us that they were nothing more than a staph infection that seems to be brought on by seasonal allergies. as soon as he gets one spot, off to LIVS he goes for a check up and his meds, and he stays on those meds for the summer.

dr. panich also suggested allergy shots for my dog, but since it only happens once a year, and he would need to get those shots several times a year, with no guarantees, we opted to just do the oral meds as needed. (joey is NOT a good car dog Chat Icon)

Re: Any Rottie Mommies Out There?

We took Cyrus to a "Special" Chat Icon Vet in Westbury and the woman barely wanted to touch the dog. She was too nervous. First of all how are you in that profession and not be able to deal with different breads. Yes Cyrus is a big boy but we had him muzzled and he was under total control. She basically told us that it was food allergies and took blood. Well $600 later... Chat Icon that visit was a waste!!! We found a vet in East Norwich that is terrific and loves Cyrus. He mailed us medicine and powder yesterday so we will see how it goes.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
