Sorry -- but with $17 million, he could have hired a financial planner that would have set him and his family up for life with passive income taxed far below 41%.
Regardless, I assume this man had some sort of financial planner. Did he not know he had options other to just walk away and do nothing? Talk to the bank? Short sale?
I understand how people get themselves into situations where they cannot afford their mortgages - BUT there are options other than walking away.
He's not an idiot b/c he got into financial trouble -- he's an idiot b/c he made a horrible and seemingly conscious decision to simply stop paying his mortgage b/c it didn't make sense.
ETA quotes from the article:
"I do have a judgment on my home and it to me is very strange because it didn't make financial sense for me to keep paying a mortgage on a home that was basically owned by someone else," he said in an interview that aired Thursday.
"Like I said, my situation was a little more different than most. I decided to just let it (the house) go, but in most cases and most families, they have nowhere else to go."

wait - you mean it wasn't okay to stop paying my rent? i really thought all the surcharges were unfair, you know, like heat, and i don't own my home, so i figured no one would notice.
in my book, he is right up there with keith hernandez. both morons.
