What does it mean to die with dignity?

I hear this saying a lot and I have no idea what it means.

Do all people not die with dignity?

I am adding this saying to my list of things that annoy me.

I could be totally wrong but I thought the whole die w dignity thing had to do with euthansia.

Meaning if you were suffering w a terminal illness you should be able to choose when you want to end the suffering---die with dignity.

I could be completely wrong thoughChat Icon

Re: What does it mean to die with dignity?

I think the Catholic Church and health care professionals often use this to describe under what circumstances a person dies... I don't believe all people die with dignity. many do, but many, many don't.

Were they given the proper medical care and services they needed?
For example, many health care insurance companies will NOT cover anti-nausea medication for cancer patients because it is not medically necessary. Constantly vomiting and being in that agony is not dying with dignity.

Were patients surrounded by those they love at their death (if anticipated)?
Many people all over the word literally die alone on the streets with no one knowing or caring that they're gone. Mother Teresa spoke a lot about this poverty the poor in particular face. There is no dignity is a solitary lonely death in the streets.

Was the death caused by society's ills? To be essentially killed by lack of fresh water, nutritious food, etc. many of the things those in the world face, in many people's opinions, this is not dying with dignity because often it was a corrupt government, or others that had the resources to help them, did not.

The phrase is also used in the abortion world.... as well as other people that are murdered and tortured. clearly, not dying with dignity.

Does this make sense? I probably didn't explain this well... but i tried.

I have heard it used to refer to people that died naturally too. Al Roker said it one morning about someone in his family that died after a battle with a disease.

If it is used to describe euthansia does that mean that people that do suffer died without dignity? (I know you are not saying this) That is whay I have a hard time understanding it.

I see what you are saying but I still think if it was the government's fault or the health insurance company's fault someon died they would still have their dignity the government or insurance company would be at fault not the person.

Yes, but what Al Roker said makes sense because in his case, that family member probably had good medical care, loving family around him, etc. etc. you can struggle like he ll with an illness and still die with dignity. i think it's when things like family members, friends, health care and basic love and care are absent is when a person does without dignity. i don't believe that God views their death as dying without dignity, but when you die alone and unloved and suffering that coudl have been eased, that is cruel and mean and in my opinion, dying without it and i would bet that the person sitting there dying feels the pain and lonliness.

yes, i agree... the PERSON still has dignity BUT we, (the government, the health insurance companies, etc.) did not GIVE them the dignity they deserved, hence dying without it.
