Mommies that have already had 1 baby?
What are some of the things you were never told about, either with pregnancy or delivery?
I didnt know you get AF for 6-8 wks after the baby
And I also didnt know with most hospitals if your holding DC you cant leave the room DC has to be in the bassinet if you leave the room

Hi,
It's not really AF, but lochia...post partum bleeding...
I also didn't know w/ a C/S they won't let you eat/drink for 24 hours after delivery (I then had to eat liquids for 24 more hours after that).
No one told me that they massage your uterus following delivery (c/s) to help w/ blood clots & that truly HURTS.
I never realized I'd be as emotional as I was after taking the baby home. I remember sitting in my glider holding my DD in hysterics, for no apparent reason...
I never knew sleep deprivation until those first 8 weeks home w/ her.
Take everything the hospital offers...diapers, formula, nipples, pacifiers, the blankets in the crib w/ DC, pads, etc. (they expect you to)
Ask as many q's as you can of the nurses b4 you go home.
Not so much something I didn't know, but if possible, keep your DH as involved as possible those first few weeks...if he doesn't change DC, feed her, rock her, put her down now, he's unlikely to in the future...work as a team.
TRUST your own instincts, you know your child best...although those first few hours/days you may seem petrified of changing, bathing your baby in a couple of weeks you're going to be a pro...

Re: Mommies that have already had 1 baby?
- I didnt know that breastfeeding while in the hospital would be so hard. I cried b/c there was nothing coming out for DS until day 3. I dont think i had any colostrum
- I didnt know how painful contractions could be. OMG i would add an F in there if I could.
- I did not know that it would take like 4-5 hours to have DS come into my room right after delivery. They have to clean the baby up and all before they bring the baby to you in your room.
- I did not know that after my water broke it would take me like 24 hours to have actual contractions. I thought they would come on right away.

You cannot eat or drink from the moment you enter the hospital, at least I couldn't. I was told to eat some ice chips and 'use my imagination'.
The massaging of your uterus is more like pressing down on your uterus to get extra 'stuff' out of it and to make it contract. Does not feel good.
6-8 weeks of bleeding is pure torture.

Re: Mommies that have already had 1 baby?
That the pain after delivery was WAY worse than the actual birth- the contractions are so painful
That you would be so sore down there that regular maxipads stink- they all have that "special" layer to wisk away moisture and it rubs the wrong way. Steal as many hospital maxipads that you can
That the nurses all have different opinions about breastfeeding- one was so anti-breastfeeding and making me so upset that I called my mom at midnight to come down the hospital and set her straight and leave me ALONE!
That most doctors aren't there when you are laboring- mine showed up as I was pushing the baby out. The nurses only go got her from the sleeping room when you are crowning!

Nobody told me that my <ahem>, "area" would swell to incredible proportions
Nobody told me that you could lose ALL bladder control for the first few days (WEEKS for me).
No one told me that I might NOT fall in love with DD immediately. I was so tired and overwhelmed I just wanted to be left alone.
No one told me that the "aftershock" uterine contractions while nursing would take my breath away.
No one told me that the first night you will be woken up practically every hour by someone wanting something (blood, blood pressure, temperature, feed baby, etc).

Nobody told me (except the nurses) that I had to pass gas to get solid food. I was taken back when the nurse asked me.

that i was going to bleed for 4 weeks after birth.
that i wasn't going to get any sleep in the hospital, between night feedings and my roommate asking for medication throughout the night.
i also wasn't prepared to go into labor with no sleep and not to sleep again for weeks!
that i was going to learn how to function on 3 hours of sleep a night.
after a csection, i wasnt even going to be able to get myself up out of bed for 2 days.
that i was going to have a catheter in
and that i would have a room full of visitors, with a sheet covering my naked lower half, bleeding all over a maxi pad/wee wee pad with a catheter in. (sorry, TMI) and wishing that they would all go home and leave me alone.

Re: Mommies that have already had 1 baby?
C-sec mom here... I didn't know...
-that having a c-sec would require for my insides to be "outside".
-that I woudln't be able to hold my baby for the first time until many hours after he was born.
-that I would regret not taking more pictures while in the hospital... or at least more pics of me & DS together.
-that I would have days of shivers... I think it was the wearing off of the epidural?
-that I needed to breathe into that tube to make the ball move up & down.
-that I couldn't laugh or cough or sneeze without feeling so much pain from the c-sec!
-that after being on a limited diet at the hospital, and giving birth to a 7½lb baby, that when I'd weigh myself after being discharged that I would only be 7lbs lighter.
-that I could get my 1st AF (not lochia)while I was still BF!
-that DH didn't have to pay for parking everytime he left & returned to the hospital.
-what a UTI was until after DS was born... and that it HURTS!
-that the c-sec cut would itch so much whilst healing.
-that I would squirt my DS in the face when my milk came in.
-that I would be a porn star with my BF tatas.

Re: Mommies that have already had 1 baby?
I forgot all this stuff! It is amazing that any of us are having additional children
I didn't know that the nurses will look "up your gown" a minimum of 2 times an hour. Whenever someone would come in the room, I would prepare to lift my gown to show them my incision. I am shocked I didn't show it to a visitor by mistake!
