How wrong would it be to come to LI and not tell some of our family?
We want to come up to NY for memorial day weekend to go to a wedding shower and see some friends... but we don't want it to turn into a circus by trying to see everyone. Would it be so terrible to only tell the people we want to see, and just avoid the rest? We'll be up for 2 weeks in July so we can see everyone then... I just don't want to go home exhausted.

My cousin lives in PA. Whenever she comes my Grammy totally bogarts her. Occasionally she'll come out and we won't tell our grandmother so we can hang out.
It's okay!

it wouldnt be horrible! but i wouldn't keep it a big secret b/c someone might find out and then you look like you were intentionally avoiding them.
so i would casually bring it up that you will be in town but your social calendar is booked up. if you dont have time to see them, don't make yourself go crazy.

I would want to do it, but wouldn't because if any of the family found out it would be so much worse for me and DH!

Not a problem but be ready for it to be a problem if it leask out (and it always does). Don't expect or put the burden of the "secret" to be kept by the people you will see. It's not fair to them. And be ready for the people you will not see not to be happy.

ugh. I grapple with this all the time -- from the perspective of the visitor and of the visitee.
You'll be exhausted trying to fit everyone in and there will be hurt feelings if you don't.
