So, what would you have done? (a bit long)
OK, let me paint the picture. Our neighbors across the street include 2 married couples, one has a 7 year old daughter, the other has a 4 year old daughter. The wife of one couple and the husband of the other couple are sister and brother. I believe their father also lives in the house.
Today was a beautiful day and as I peeked through my window this morning (OK, I admit I am a bit nosey!) it looked like the 7 year old girl was making her communion today... everyone was dressed up and looked happy, taking pictures before they left.
DH and I were home later around 7 and he comes into the kitchen to tell me they are fighting across the street. He knows I always want to know what is going on, so he takes over feeding DS and I go peek out the front window.
All I see is a huge commotion, they are all in their driveway screaming at each other. It looks like one husband is trying to get at the other husband to hit him, the 2 little girls are outside watching the whole thing, the men are cursing at each other, the other wife is yelling at the other husband. They are literally screaming at each other so loud I could hear them in my house with no windows open. Then I see the one husband try to go for the other husband again and the wife steps in the middle and is trying to hold her DH back. I hear her scream HELP! I see the 2 little girls hysterically crying as they watch this unfold on the driveway of the house.
I picked up the phone and called 911. FOr some reason my phone just rang and rang and before they picked up the people across the street went into the house. So I hung up. 5 minutes later the police show up at our house and DH just told them everything was fine.
My opinion is that I try not to get involved in things like this, but if you are out in public view and there are small children involved who could potentially get hurt, I am calling the cops.
What would you do in this situation? Stay out of it? Call the cops? DH actually went outside after the wife yelled help and walked out to our driveway and they kind of settled down a bit. As soon as he went back inside they were right back at it. I don't feel bad at all for calling the cops.

Yikes. I am the kind of person that will always call the cops. I called them twice on our neighbor when we lived in our apartment because he beat his wife and we could hear it from the hallway. Better safe than sorry in my opinion - because at least there will be a record of someone complaining in the event that something bad ever happens. I think you did the right thing. My neighbors had a party today and I am thinking now that if I saw that I would have called too.

I think i would have called the cops, I would not have let my dh get involoved. I dont know what the people may have in the their hands or capable of doing. All i would need is my dh getting involved and someone getting hurt and all of them turning and saying my dh did something and him get arrested. that would be our luck.

I totally agree... luckily DH never went past our driveway and we are not even sure they saw him for sure. I guess he just wanted them to notice him as a way of saying that there were people watching.
Needless to say this is not the first that we have seen of their tempers. Apparently when we first moved in and I was away on business DH heard one wife screaming at DH at 4 in the morning.. she ended up throwing a plant on the hood of his car and he drove away. Nice neighbors!!!!

I would say calling them "a bit off" would be the understatement of the year!!!! We are friendly with them, but have definitely avoided inviting them over!
