this is where I think you're wrong.
NOT everyone knows that dogs get tattooed! Honestly, I've had MANY dogs in my life.. and none have had tattoos!
It's really not common knowledge.. IMO!

because it's an identity tattoo. breeders do it. it's not cruelty. you all are ridiculous
ok, instead of explaining in the first place none of us would have questioned. i had NO idea that breeders do it, so that makes me RIDICOULOUS?? Are you FREAKING serious...get off your HIGH HORSE.
It is still debatable whether it is cruelty. Sometimes it is done by tattooing and sometimes the dog is actually branded. The puppy mills do it because the dog is just a number to them anyway. The idea reminds me of the holocaust and/or slavery. Some people do think it's best to have both a tattoo and a microchip. I asked Kimmie whether she knew the history of her dog's tattoo. I never got an answer.

your dog could still have come from one. mine is a rescue and he may have. he doesn't have a tattoo, though.

Re: One dog that was allowed in to Target
he's definitely not from a puppy mill. i got him from a responsible breeder that's on both the akc website and the dachshund run of america website. i did my research believe me. i have 2 rescue dogs and would never wanna contribute to the horrible world of byob/puppy mills

I think the way you stated it, you were setting yourself up to be the bad guy. You must like the attention.

Re: One dog that was allowed in to Target
I've never heard of tattoing a dog but I guess it makes since in lieu of a chip. My dog is chipped and I guess that could be considered "cruelty"???

what do you mean am i serious??????
why does your dog have a tattoo in his/her ear??
My moms french bulldog has a tattoo on her inner thigh area, it was done before my mom got her, it was like a tracking number or something..instead of putting a chip in the dog.
That doesn't surprise me. It's probably a registry number.
Thoroughbreds that race are tattooed with their registration numbers on the inside of their top lip. (Yes, all of them.)
Standardbreds that harness race are freeze branded with their registration number on their necks. It's referred to as their "tattoo" but it's really a freeze brand (not a hot brand).
To be honest, the tattoos are a wonderful way to identify an animal in the event of loss or theft... they can be matched to a registry and/or used to prove ownership. I wouldn't do it if it was not a breed standard (as I think it wouldn't be as helpful) - but it does act as a good means of identification for animals whose breed normally does this -- not b/c I think it's cruel or traumatizing, but merely b/c it wouldn't be as helpful in identifying the animal.

Yes, NO thoroughbred can enter a race without a lip tattoo. Any thoroughbred with any serious race training will be tattooed. Many quarter horses are also tattooed -- but since few quarter horses race these days, tattoos on them are far less common.
Horses are likely not put under general anesthesia, but they are likely sedated and/or given a local anesthetic. They don't feel any pain during the procedure and pain or discomfort afterwards is usually nonexistent.
General anesthesia is extremely danagerous for horses and reserved for necessary surgical procedures only. The strong flight or fight instinct in horses makes them scared, unpredictable, and likely to panic and/or injure themselves coming out of anesthesia. It is done, of course, when necessary - but it's certainly not necessary for something as quick and simple as a tattoo. A strong sedative for a horse will leave the horse conscious, standing, but free from pain and very close to asleep.
Smaller animals, like dogs, that do better with anesthesia, are usually put under general anesthesia for tattooing or tattooed while at the vet for another procedure, like sterilization.
Tattoos are much more common on animals than most people realize. Some animals are actually tattooed on areas with pink skin exposed (say the nose) to prevent sunburn. This is, in my experience, extremely rare with horses, though. I've honestly NEVER seen a horse tattooed to prevent sunburn (though horses with pink skin and white hair over that skin are very susceptible to sunburn... Sunscreen and desitin works very well, though. )
