Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
Nope!!!!
I developed better socially by having an actual job, unlike most of the "kids" I went to school with.
I also had a "big ***" and tought that going to a private college down the block was best.....now I have 35k in debt to show for it.
I also felt my school was terrible.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
Completely worth it... I had the best experience going away to school both academically, emotionally and extra-curricularly.
However, that said, I did get a lot of financial aid and scholarships so I was able to go away to a private school. the loans i took out would have been the same loans i would have had to take out to go to a SUNY.
For my Masters degree, i worked at the university, so I received tuition remission...so i had no loans, thank god!

education is always with it.... but it is also what you make of it... I'm a product of the state system- both my graduate and undergraduate... unless you are in a field that needs a big name, I really think spending 40k/year for an undergraduate degree is a waste.
I totally disagree. I think the experience that you can get at some private colleges is so much more than what a state school can offer. I feel that the money I spent to go to a small private liberal arts school was totally worth it. Everything I had there I never felt SUNY schools could ever even match.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
for me it is worth it b/c my tuition was and still is dirt cheap! first, i went to suffolk community so it was very inexpensive and now i've transferred my credits to empire state college to complete my undergrad and that is real cheap too!
also, now that i'm married and on my own i qualify for federal aid and they paid, this semester, my entire tuition!! so i'm very lucky.
i think i would be upset if i had went away to a really expensive school when, for me and the career i will have, the end result is the same. i don't think an education is ever a waste or not worth it but there are different ways to go about it so if you can save money and still have the same end result then that's the best route, IMO. at the same time, however, if you really wanted the "going away" and being on your own experience then it is money well spent - no matter what, the person is the one paying for it so it is like buying an expensive car - both the civic and the BMW will get you to the same place but if you want to spend your money on the more $ car then it is your money and your choice to do so... same thing with colleges, really.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
yes, becuase 90% of my higher ed was paid for by scholarships / stipends....
being a researcher (a profession that has ridiculously high ed requirements and horrifically low salaries) I would never dig out from under the debt if it weren't for the scholarship
yay for public ed and scholarships

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
My undergrad was definitely worth it. I went to a state school and had to take out very little money to do so.
My private grad school, however, was not worth the money. I wish I had went to a state school - hindsight is always 20/20.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
I needed my degree in order to have my job, however, I wouldn't necessarily say what I learned in those classes is what was so worth it, but moreso the experience that came with it.
I learned way more being in a classroom and teaching then being in a classroom being taught. If that makes sense?

Honestly, thats my one and only reget. I should have stayed home, went to local college and not had any loans to pay off. I appreciate my education but think it was overpriced and not $$ well spent.
I would recommend this to anyone! I did it and don't regret it at all.
To the original question, no...without my loans, I wouldn't be able to teach!

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
I got scholarships to a private college for undergrad and loved every second of college!
I took some loans for grad school and felt it was totally worth it. I just paid them off last year which felt great. These loans enabled me to get a job I love with an education I value.

i answered no for my DH - we're paying a grad loan that was a total waste. he loves his job, but he totally did not need to go to grad school for an MFA.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
My loans weren't a lot..I went to Suffolk Community and then onto SUNY for my Bachelor's. I went to school for one thing (Sociology) and doing something different (Teaching/Caregiving) Infants 6weeks up to children 12 Years Old. I left to be a SAHM..Of course that was worth it, but, I don't know if my degrees will ever come into play.

Nope - based on the salary I make, not at all. I could have possibly got another job in a different field paying lots more.

Re: Were your student loans worth it? Poll
I had loans for one undergrad degree and one grad degree. The undergrad loans were totally worth it, I felt I got a great education and a wonderful experience all around.
Grad loan, no way. The program was really poor, I considered leaving, but it was an accelerated program, so it was a LOT easier and probably cheaper in the long run to just stay and finish it up. Fortunately, I had a PT job that paid my room and board, so at least I had that.
