Manicures
I'm early in my first trimester. Is getting a manicure a bad idea? I'd like to get one, but I'm slightly worried about the fumes.

Re: Manicures
You can get manicures! Just sit nearer to the door if you're nervous so there is more of a breeze. Two of the nail technicians in my salon had perfectly healthy babies in the past 4 months and they worked there all day, every day until 2 weeks before their due dates!
I get manicures every 3 weeks or so, I'm now 34 weeks and everything is perfect and right on track!

Re: Manicures
I would get one - If I had nails.
Though I just came to the realization that since my feet are already starting to expland, I will need to get pedicures as sandal season is right here.

Re: Manicures
hi
ok, the currently accepted thing is 'sure, get your mani/pedi'
However...... I am purposefully avoiding any nail polish / remover during pregnancy. let me explain why....
I work in a neurobiology lab... organic solvents (ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene) are nasty.... they are definitely NOT good to breathe in during nervous system development... In the lab, we're legally required to do all of that stuff in a fume hood (so there's no smell at all for us and our co-workers to breathe in)....
The nail salons are NUTS! soooo much fumes and NO ventilation. I have no idea why it's like that but it is.... I would feel bad breathing in fumes from even myself doing my nails outside, none the less one of those smelly places.
In addition, it's very well known that organic solvents can be absorbed into the skin... so a small portion of the remover and the polish likely get aborbed into our systems...
I'm not waiting the 30 years it takes for the gov't to admit that something isn't healthy.... I'm being super cautious and am avoiding smelling fumes everywhere... work and in personal life...
sorry, off my soapbox now

I agree, I really need to get a pedi but I am so hesitant to go and get it done because of the fumes. I am also really cautious and a tad paranoid

Re: Manicures
Manicures are fine.
You just have to watch out when they massage your feet for a pedicure. There are supposedly pressure points which can trigger labor.

Re: Manicures
yeah, I usually don't do my nails, but I DO get a couple pedi's during the summer (love those bright red toenails in my flip flops!)
this year I decided to go 'organic' plain toes... sigh.... I'd do them myself, but I really am concerned of any toluene being absorbed into my system from the polish.....

yup - the pressure points are around your ankles. if they start to massage you there, just say "no thanks" and tell them you are PG - they will totally understand

Re: Manicures
if you're worried about fumes, you can wear a surgical mask for short time you're there. When my hair dresser was pregnant she would were one, she was uptight about the fumes from the color dye/bleach/hair spray.
