Remedy for hiccups - who knew?!
A few weeks ago a co-worker had BAD hiccups at the office so my boss told her to go and get some peanut butter from the kitchen... He said he swears by this remedy. He had her take a big spoonful of peanut butter and put it in her mouth - swallow, GONE!
I was amazed - he said he grew up with this remedy and it always works and he doesn't know why. Well, I kept it in the back of my mind and tonight when I got home DH was MISERABLE because he has had hiccups *ALL* day long - since, literally, 7am!
I felt so bad and immediately suggested the peanut butter - he thought I was nuts but one BIG spoonful later - GONE! Just like magic!
Just thought I'd share! Anyone ever heard of this?

Re: Remedy for hiccups - who knew?!
No I didnt know that one...thats a good one for next time....
The spoonful of sugar one works...also thumbs in your ears and pinkies holding your nose and drinking through a straw works all the time for me...
but I have to say the peanut butter sounds more pleasant and less labor intensive....

Look at all the "remedies" we have for hiccups!
I do the pencil across the mouth while drinking a cup of water remedy.
Peanut butter sounds tastier though!

Re: Remedy for hiccups - who knew?!
Hiccups are muscle spasms, so anything that refocuses the muscles will often stop the spasms. I seriously doubt it's "peanut butter" per se. Most "remedies" have your body doing something to either refocus your muscles, or distract your brain from the hiccups. I find that just focused breathing gets rid of it. Sometimes just ignoring it makes it go away.

I hate peanut butter so much this post actually made me gag. I hate the hiccups, too, but not bad enough to eat peanut butter.

Yup, anything that makes you swallow slowly and relax will usually do the trick -- hence the drinking water upside remedy, etc.

This and have someone scare you. Believe it or not, the someone scaring me works..Crazy, I know, but, it works. When I was a teen, my friend told me this and I thought he was being a dork..LOL.

Re: Remedy for hiccups - who knew?!
One downside to the peanut butter trick: I came back down to the kitchen a few minutes later because I was going to get a drink and DH was just sitting there with the jar of PB and a spoon I was like, did you get them again?? He's like NO

Yep, if you hold your breath a few times and concentrate on holding your diaphragm muscle still it should work. Works for me.
The peanut butter trick only distracts you long enough that you have to slow your breathing and concentrate..same with sugar..it's so intense you are distracted.
