Religion and Politics

Did anyone see the "Compassion Forum" on CNN last night? It was Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama answering questions about their faith. I didn't see too much of it but one of the questions they asked Hilary that displayed on the bottom of the screen was "When has the holy spirit been with you?"
This whole thing REALLY bothered me. Why should religion have anything to do with the presidential election? What if one of the candiates was atheist?

ETA: sorry for the heavy topic this early on a monday morning!

Re: Religion and Politics

Technically it shouldn't - seperation of church and state, etc.
But it still does - it's one of the main reasons why GW was reelected. He's a conservative Christian and so is most of the midwest....
It's the same reason things keep popping up about Obama's Reverend - people are concerned about his religious viewpoints.

Re: Religion and Politics

I agree they should not have to discuss religion as their personal beliefs. I think it is irrelevant in how they would fie as a candidate.

Wasn't the whole purpose of the mass exodus from England to separate governent and religion?

Yes, the protestants were being persecuted for their beliefs. However there are so many of those puritan beliefs that are ingrained in society today, which I believe contributes to this intermingling of religion and polictics.

Re: Religion and Politics

Oh I know. It was a rhetorical question just meant to be though provoking. Religion will always be an issue as 95% of the population believes in a higher being controlling the universe. I just wish that performance and ability to lead would be important factors in deciding who is going to be our next leader, rather than religion, which most people are born into & do not choose....does that make sense?
