Re: Military Pay?
I dont know exactly what my BIL makes...he is in Iraq currently serving in the Army (active duty- not Reserves) but I do know that if he signed up for 4 more years he would have received a bonus of at least $50K. In his words...."not enough to spend another year in Iraq."

Re: Military Pay?
It does depend on the rank of the soldier, so it is hard to tell. The pay is also TAX FREE, and they pay for your housing in the US while your hubby is overseas.
My DH is in the Army Reserves and has told me this is what happened when he got deployed.

Thats how one of my friends feels. He just finished his years with the Marines and decided not to re-enlist (not sure if thats the right word)

Thanks - I think they receive active duty pay when reservists are called to full time duty.

So they would pay our mortgage?

Yes, they pay some if not all. I know my husband was renting, and they paid his rent. It is called BAH Type 2. Basic Allowance Housing

Thanks so much! It isn't much though for what his rank would be. He has his bachelor's degree so I am guessing he would be like an E-2 or E-3.
It depends on what his recruiter would put him at. The Bachelor's Degree would make no difference unless he did ROTC.
My husband just said that he did see peopel with Bachelor's degrees that came into the Army right as an E4, depends on the recruiter, and he is not sure if the military still does it. (Based on the Army)

Re: Military Pay?
Keep in mind that your DH could also be activated, but not have to go to war. Sometimes they activate reserve units to report to a military base for a set amount of time and do the jobs of the active duty military members who are deployed.
Any time a reservist is activated (whether in the U.S. or in a war zone), he'll get paid based on his rank. Your DH can find out from the recruiter what his rank would be (E-3, etc.), and get the base pay from there. If you qualify for BAH, you'd get that too during the times when he's activated - as another poster said, it's a set amount of money based on your zip code, and won't necessarily cover your whole mortgage payment.
If he is sent to a war zone, you'll also get family separation pay (I want to say it's about $200 extra a month, but it could've gone up since my DH was over there). And everything he earns while in a war zone will be income tax-free.

actually, they give you money for your rent/mortgage.
there is also combat pay, and even that is different depending on where your duty station is.
however, a ptv does NOT make 60 or 70k. if that was the case, I'D join the miliary.
it also depends, as a reservist, who your employer is.
NYPD pays you while you're on military leave, so you "double" dip...you get your NYPD check and your military pay as well.
it's really too hard to answer.
military pay is also tax free up to a certain amount. that is a BIG help. you can make a decent amount of money deployed, but again, that would also depend on what he's making now.

ETA: Would I have the option to move to a base if I wanted to or had to for financial reasons?
I want to say no, but I'm not 100% sure. I know that often there are waiting lists for base housing, and people who are full time active duty would probably be given priority over those who are reservists and just activated for X amount of time. Since your DH wouldn't be stationed there permanently, I don't know if the housing officials would consider you eligible.

ETA: I can't believe the bonus was that much! The marines don't offer any bonus to reserve enlisters...
That's also because it's a first time enlistment. I've heard of the Army paying a signing bonus for certain specific jobs upon initial enlistment, but not always. As far as I know, the Marines don't pay signing bonuses to enlist. But they do when you re-enlist if they want to keep you. Some of DH's friends have been offered even more money than that, and when you're not making a very high salary and you're offered twice your yearly pay while you're in a war zone so it'd be tax free and you could walk away with 100% of it in your bank account, it's hard to turn down. But they were all active duty, I don't know if they offer reservists re-enlistment bonuses.

The Army does offer re-enlistment bonuses.
