question about an invitation I recieved yeterday

We got an invitation to my cousin's bat mitzvah yesterday. On the bottom there is a little picture of a bowtie and next to it says "invited"
What does this mean?

I've never seen that, but I would guess it means that guys should feel free to wear black tie, but it's not required...just like black tie optional

this is what I was thinking, but would you make an event with all those kids black tie? I don't have a dress thats anywhere near black tie, and really don't want to buy one.

Yeah, some people do. I've been to a number of black time bar/bat mitzvah's.

I think I have seen/heard of that. I think it's black tie optional, but with the word "invited" in lieu of "optional". They think it either sounds more elegant, or they are telling you-- we want you to dress black even thought it's not mandatory.

I personally think it's stupid, just make it black tie, or not.

This is not that unusuall for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and many times they make it optional expecting the adults to go with it, but many of the kids do not.

I think they just played with the working, as another poster mentioned, to make it sound more like a request than an option, KWIM?

Agreed on all counts.

Adults - Black Tie
Kids - Suits....

Re: question about an invitation I recieved yeterday

Maybe that DH is also invited? Chat Icon I've never seen that before, so I'm just making a wild guess.

Sort of like the Chat Icon smilie here to indicate DH....

That is interesting, but wouldn't the envelope say Mr & Mrs? What if you aren't married? Are they implying you have to bring a date then? And then the invite should be Ms. & Guest.

I'm going with the black tie optional theory but adding that since it is not mandatory you don't have to buy a whole new dress, just whichever is the dressiest.

The black tie optional idea makes more sense, but everyone else already said that. I didn't want to just say "ITA", so I figured I'd start my own conspiracy theory... External Image

Re: question about an invitation I recieved yeterday

It DEFINITELY means "Black Tie Invited", trust me, I know these things Chat Icon

Its a little more forceful or insistent than "Black Tie Optional" ... they didn't want to come out and just state "Black Tie" so they added the "Invited" to soften the request.

I would still say that a dark suit with a white shirt is acceptable for your DH.

And I would probably wear a formal gown ... or at least a long dress.

Re: question about an invitation I recieved yeterday

Here are invitations with the bowtie symbol so you can see what it actually looks like ....

(these aren't the invitation the OP rec'd, just invitations that have the "bowtie")

Well, we're going to have to make do with what we have. DH only ones one suit and I don't really have any dresses that are considered black tie. We don't have the $ to buy new clothes and give her a gift on top of it, so they're going to have to live with our non black-tie attire. Thats better than not attending, right?
