Think $50 is good enough?

Suffolk County Vector Control (the mosquito people) came by they want to put a low voltage mosquito trap behind my house to collect the mosquitos to track for west nile. They used to put it behind my neighbors house but she passed away. The machine will run from 7-7 7 days a week from May-October. They will reimburse us $50 for the season. With the $$ of electricity is $50 reasonable?

Re: Think $50 is good enough?

Are you sure it would have to hook up to your house?

Also... I'm very familiar with WNV and bug trapping since it's a huge issue for horse owners. I don't think you need to be concerned about WNV itself, but the annoyance factor -- these things are designed to attract bugs and DO actually attract more bugs than having no trap at all. I personally wouldn't want something on my property that would be drawing bugs to the area. Unless it's a couple hundred feet away from your house or the main area where you spend time in the back yard, you may find more bugs than usual. (If it was in your neighbors yard last season, though, and you didn't have a problem, then you probably don't have to worry! -- really depends on the size of your lots and proximity of the houses.)

ETA -- this is really important work, though... WNV is unfortunately prevalent on LI. Chat Icon

Re: Think $50 is good enough?

We have a barn in the backyard. The barn about 75' from the house. It will be behind the barn which is a GOOD 125' away from the house/pool etc. I am not exactly sure where it was last year (we have a brook and pond behind the house) but we had almost NO mosquitos last year which was fantastic!

ETA: Yes it needs to be plugged in. We have power in the barn because it is used as a workshop

I think I wouldn't mind paying for the electricity for it if it would keep ALL the mosquitos away. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ah, then nm what I said. You'll be fine. In fact, it will actually wind up attracting bugs AWAY from your property! Chat Icon

We always put bug traps toward the perimeter of horse properties (far away from the barn) so that they draw the bugs away. This could actually help keep the mosquitos away from your yard!

Re: Think $50 is good enough?

I don't really MIND having the unit here, I think it's a good thing I just dont want to have to pay for everyone on my block to be bug free KWIM. Think $50 will cover the cost of running it all season. LIPA is outrageous!
