What's more important in choosing a Pediatician?
When it comes to the physician's hospital affiliations. Do you base it off of what hospital you are delivering at or what hospital is closest to your home? For me those are 2 different hospitals and I'm not finding anyone (that people have had good experiences with) that is affiliated with both.

I wouldn't think you necessarily need someone at the hospital you delivered in. I know I'll be delivering in the city but I'm sure we'll pick a ped. who is affiliated closer to home in Queens.

I plan on picking a pediatrician affiliated with the hospital I would choose to have my child treated in should they ever need hospital services. It happens to be be close to my home as well as the hospital I will be delivering it - but that is coincidence.

My ped was not affliated with the hospital I delivered at but is with the pedatric ER and hospital I would take my DD in an emergency. Both are near my home but the one I delivered at have private rooms without paying extra.

I know at Winthrop, you need to have a pediatrician affliated with the hospital see your baby after they are born. Your OBGYN should be able to help you out.

Re: What's more important in choosing a Pediatician?
With my first, I didn't deliver at a close to home hospital. I delivered at Stonybrook and lived in Huntington. I didn't think the ped. that saw the baby at the hospital was overly important. I would rather has a ped. that is affiliated with the closest hospital to where I lived.

Re: What's more important in choosing a Pediatician?
I went with a ped who does not take call in the hospital I delivered in. So the peds who were, saw her and gave my ped her info.

If your ped is not affiliated, an on staff ped will do the initial exam. It doesn't have to limit your choices.

Re: What's more important in choosing a Pediatician?
Good to know. I didn't know people could choose what hospital to deliver at... I thought it was wherever your OB has affiliation. I'd love a private room (but refuse to pay for it), but with my high risk situation I don't think I have a choice of hospital and I wouldn't give up my OB for anything. I asked my OB at one of my first appointments and he told me flat out that I was having the baby at NSUH. I live much closer to Winthrop though so that's where I'd go in an emergency. So I guess a Winthrop doc is what I'll go with. I take it if you move you get a new pediatrician affiliated with your new local hospital - even if you stay on the Island?

Absolutely. And I would think you'd select the best possible hospital to deliver so it would stand to reason that would be the same place you'd want your DC if, God forbid, they needed something.

But I really didn't think you can "pick" a hospital your OB isn't affiliated with? Also if you have special high risk circumstances I've heard there are hospitals better able to deal with certain things. Of course I'd want the best hospital for the baby and to deliver at (although I think everyone feels their's is pretty darn good for various reasons and circumstances - espeicially on LI). However, in a true emergency you'd have to take the baby to a hospital very close... to deliver my hospital isn't "far" but it's not the closest either.

Well, I guess it's timing then - I selected my OB based on the hospital, not the other way around.
If your child has to be brought in through emergent care for a hospital stay, chances are they're going to need a specialist so your ped will be somewhat irrelevant. If you're comfortable with both hospital choices, I'd go with the pediatrician you feel is best. You can just have the attending ped handle DC's care while you're in the hospital and schedule the baby's 1st appt for a few days after you get home - plenty of people do this.
