they are 8 - i sincerely doubt they knew the seriousness of what they were planning. how many 8 year olds truly understand the concept of death? plus the story says that this teacher works with "learning disabilities, including attention deficit disorder, delayed development and hyperactivity." it possible that this was that kind of class.
it doesn't excuse them, but it makes you stop and think more about their actual intent, IMO.
