it's a sonogram that is inserted in the vagina...a much closer picture than a regular sonogram on the belly.

Actually I think that's referred to as a transvaginal sono and an internal is when the doctor's insert a finger to determine you cervix condition towards the end of pregnancy...I think.

This is true. During an internal, the doctor checks your Cervix for effacement and dilation using their fingers. I had my first one the other day and it wasn't that bad just some pressure.
