Tecchies! need your help
DH would like an external hard drive to store mostly music, some video. What do I look for-he has a few thousand songs. TIA!

DH bought one at best buy:
Simple Tech
it was on sale at the time, i think he spent around $100, i am not sure. it was more than what he needed, but he was thinking about what he would need in the future as well. really easy to use and works great!!

I was going to say that it costs more than other ones at the same capacity, but this one doesn't need an external power supply. It gets power from the USB port. That is very handy for traveling.
If the external drive is going to stay attached to your desktop PC, I would go with the ones that have the external power supply. They are much cheaper to buy.
I would lean towards a 350-500GB drive if you don't get the USB powered one. That seems to be the best price-point right now.

Assuming 6 megabytes for the average song, a 300 gig drive could hold almost 50,000 songs, and a 500 gig drive could hold about 83,000 songs. It's safe to say that should be plenty.

Just an FYI - we bought the same drive on 10/25 and it failed this week. We have been using it for backup and it is corrupting the files. DH is a computer guy and tried reformatting the drive and some other techie things and can't fix it. He is sending it back. It's possible we got a lemon, but I just thought I should give you a heads up
