No....I think a lot of people have the pride that NY has EVERYTHING!!! Redirect funds and taxes instead.

Re: Long Island as the 51st State???
I think it's silly. There have to be better ways to try to keep more of our tax dollars here than seceding from the state. I would imagine that it would actually increase our taxes since we'd have to create a new government seat and all that goes along with it.
When I was working for LI Tourism I learned that for many years there has been a small movement in the upstate counties to have the 5 boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk & Westchester broken off and made into South New York. They feel like we get more of Albany's attention. However, they would not be able to survive without the tax assistance the downstate counties provide so "North New York" would not be able to support itself.

Re: Long Island as the 51st State???
Overall I think it's pretty rediculous and will never happen, but I can see the frustration...
I've heard occasional talk here in VA that Northern VA should be separate from the rest of VA - mostly from those outside of Northern VA... until you tell them that NOVA provides a majority of the tax revenue for the state
Then they want to keep us. :P

I dont know if I am for a 51st state of Long Island but I do think Peconic County would be a better idea.

Something along this line has been going on for years, if not decades. People who want to be in the public spotlight for a while have nothing better to do than make outlandish statements, just to hear their own voice on TV.

Very well said.

ITA with this... i am not interested in LI becoming a state.
as they said on 1010 WINS this morning - long island is a dialect, not a state

Re: Long Island as the 51st State???
I think more research needs to be done as to exactly what would happen in terms of how tax dollars are spent. I don't think its right that LI has such a high population and pays so much in taxes, yet we don't see all that money come back to us. However, with all the corruption in the government, I'd be very concerned we'd be paying HIGHER taxes to duplicate the state services (and putting more money in the pockets of the politicians!) I don't think that LI gets a fair deal when it comes to budgeting.
I think we should consolidate school districts before making a new state.

I think it would cost WAY to much to create all the infrastructure needed for such a thing. NYS would also lose LI as a tax base which would affect them negatively.
I don't see it happening.

Re: Long Island as the 51st State???
This comes up every few years, and it always gets shot down. Logistically it would be a nightmare, and to localise all of the state-funded programs would bankrupt us.
But I do wish that LI would have a centralised school district like NYC.

Honestly curious - why? I think that the districts are drawn in a bizzare way, and that depending on the needs of the student it is hard to get programming for them if they are not in a district that provides it.
