MYTH? "Cure" for Stretch marks
All those creams I see, and of course the Palmer's Cocoa Butter... is it just a myth that anything works for stretch marks and we're stuck with them for life, or does something actually work, or help make them look less noticeable?
After DS, I was left with quite a few surrounding my belly button, and on my sides (love handles), but they somewhat faded, but are still there. I never really put anything on them because I didn't notice them until after labor. Anyway, now that baby #2 is underway, I'd like to know if there's something that I could do about them. I want to go into a bikini next summer without being self-conscious about the marks. Thoughts?

Stretch marks have a lot to do with heredity. if your mom had them, there is a very good chance you'll get them despite how much cocoa butter you put on.
there's some products that will fade them more then they are, but they are $ and not 100% effective.

I say if you're going to get them, you're going to get them. I never got any and used lotion here and there - I'm bad about moisturizing my body.

I agree with the other girls...if you're going to get them there's really no way to avoid it. I can't see moisturizing your skin ever being a bad thing, but like SweetCaroline, I'm pretty bad about it too.

Re: MYTH? "Cure" for Stretch marks
I'm not sure if you were looking for preventative measures, or a cure after you have them, but either way, you're gonna get/have them if you're genetically prone to them.
Even after you get them, they'll fade, and might even turn the color of your skin, but you'll be able to see where they were. You'll be able to see the stretched skin.

Yeah, but they could run on your dad's side. My mom didn't get them either. My dad's side did.

Who knows if the creams help but they certainly won't hurt.
Honestly one of the best things you can do to prevent stretch marks is keep hydrated. Drink lots and lots of water. It helps with skin elasticity.

I tried Palmers and a special cream and both did not work.

I lacked in drinking water the last time, and that could have been the reason I had them all over afterwards. Hmmm... gotta run to watercooler! lol

I've got them baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad and I use cocoa butter after my morning shower and before bed so I will let you know if it helps with the appearance after DS arrives. Right now though, they are dark and fugly.

Re: MYTH? "Cure" for Stretch marks
Mine are bad too and I used cocoa butter starting very early on in my pregnancy. Mine kind of look like brains...
I had a feeling I would get them, because I got them during puberty.
Anyone try Mederma lotion?

Most dermatologists will tell you that creasm, lotions and vitamin E will do jack poo for ya. I agree.
I had stretch marks LONG before I was pregnant due to excessive weight on my body. They faded when I lost the weight and they will never go away. It is what it is. I prefer to look at them as "battle scars."

Re: MYTH? "Cure" for Stretch marks
Here's why I think the creams *may* make some difference... My mom didnt get them. She was religious about using cocoa butter multiple times a day. Her sister didnt do that and got them (we're not clear if my grandmother got them). My mom made me be crazy with the creams (I used Bio Oil at night and concentrated Palmer's cream in the AM) and I didnt get even one after gaining 45lbs at 5' tall . My cousin is now PG so now we'll see what happens with her...
