Unemployment Checks-????
Do they automatically take out the taxes when you get your check?
I remember they did that when my dh got unemployment many, many years ago but someone has told me that you have to pay the taxes on the side?
(This person is not from NY though).

they take out federal taxes, not state.

I'm on unemployment right now - you need to request when you first file that they deduct taxes if you want them deducted, and they are only federal.

I actually have a question about this. I filed for unemployment online.. it said to file a claim the next day.. i did. it never told me how much i'll get or when i will get it. has anyone else filed online? what was the process? how can i find out how much i'll get? or when i'll get it?

you can choose to either have the tax taken out or to pay it when you reconcile your taxes

When did you file? They sent me paperwork in the mail that explained how much I was eligible to receive. It came in the mail about a week later.

if you get the 405, after "taxes" its 365 per week

This is true. When you file your original file/claim online there is a prompt to ask you if you want fed taxes deducted.

I only filed a few days ago. I'm just impatient and want money. haha. I know it won't be much. rumor has it that the most I'll get a week is either 175 or 200 since I was tipped base.
Since your tips probably were not claimed and the taxes on them were not paid, you cannot figure them to get unemployment.
Also, if you try to claim the full amount and your taxes were not paid on your tips, the IRS will be all over you.
In addition, if you were fired you may or may not be eligible for benefits.
Furthermore, the first week you will not get any paid benefits, as there is a wait for the first week.
And as a final piece of advice from someone who spent a long period of time in that same industry, I'd be really careful about posting your earnings and also about how you are going to get a job off the books while trying to collect unemployment. You are setting yourself up to get slammed.

thanks but we were required to claim all of our tips. restaurants are audited all of the time and we all wanted to be safe. i guess i'll just suck it up until i find a job.
i wasnt fired, my job went out of business.
