Re: Anyone in the Physical Therapy field?
I work at a college that offers the program. It's changing from a required Master's to a required Doctorate, so our school now only offers the DPT, or doctorate in physical therapy. The requirements are similar to that of med school, but I believe it's an additional 4 or 5 years full-time school after the bachelor's. Any questions, FM me!
Here are the requirements for the DPT program. Depending on his bachelor degree, he may not need too many additional prereqs. It is impossible to work full-time while attending though. It's competitive; they accept about 35 students per year out of several hundred applications.
Baccalaureate degree (no preferred major required) 27 credits of natural sciences for science majors. The following courses must include laboratory segments (except where noted) and have been completed within the last ten years: 8 credits of Biology 8 credits of Chemistry 8 credits of Physics 3 credits of 300-level Physiology (lab not required) OR 8 credits of Anatomy and Physiology (labs required) 9 credits of Arts and Humanities 9 credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences 3 credits of English composition or expository writing 3 credits of Statistics
Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Current certification in Standard First Aid. 100 hours of volunteer or work experience with a physical therapist. Multiple sites are preferred. Verification of hours are must be on an official letterhead.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The general exam includes verbal, quantitative and analytical testing. Information about this test is available online at www.gre.org. All applicants whose native or first language is not English must also score at least 550 paper-based or 213 computer-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) within two years prior to admission. Three references; at least one of these references must be from an observance of a licensed Physical Therapist.

Re: Anyone in the Physical Therapy field?
Yes, as PP mentioned, most programs are moving to DPT. many undergraduate schools offer it. if he doesn't already have a bachelor's degree, it is usually a 6-7 year program which includes the Bachelor's. If he already has a Bachelor's it would be less.
It's a great field with a variety of settings you could work in: schools, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, private practice, etc.

Two of my closest friends are PT's. They received undergraduate degrees in non-related fields and got PT certification by going to school in Amsterdam.

Re: Anyone in the Physical Therapy field?
wow, ty for the input. Yikes 8 years and that is full time. Ugh. Ok. He has his AA right now. Me being a SAHM who is going back to school in the fall PT and will be going until Lukie is in Kindergarten doesn't leave much room for DH to go to school. Are any of the courses offered online? That would help out. What about starting out as a PT Assistant? Thoughts?

Here are the requirements for the PT Assistant program: link It's not really a stepping stone to a bachelor's degree, because the Associate in Applied Science programs are meant to be stand alone, and not created for transfer purposes. So he may do the two years in that program, and will most likely still need another at least 2 years full-time to get a bachelor's and complete the upper division credits. He may be able to do some of the liberal arts courses online, but the lab-based courses are really going to need to be completed in person. He may also want to see if you can manage with the salary of a PT assistant--I believe they make in the $30s to $40s starting out. It's kind of like starting as a nurse with the intention of becoming a doctor...It's not unheard of, but it won't necessarily help that much.

how about a degree is sports medicine (it is more like a trainer rather than a medical degree). Go onto Empire State or Wilson Tech to look at some certification programs that you can also expand your degree. How aout phelbotomy (the IV team at my hospital makes a ton of money) or radiology tech

ill ask him about sports med. he fell 20' in 98 and hurt his back. He hurt for years until he basically got rid of the pain himself very recently. Now he wants to help others.
The $30-$40k would be in addition to his contracting business so until I was working FT it would just be an added bonus.
