Mama Sbarro's in Hicksville

A worker at this restaurant was found to have typhoid fever. I live in the area, but don't eat here. Passing along in case anyone has!

(03/22/08) HICKSVILLE - Nassau County Department of Health officials say a food handler from Mama Sbarro's Pizzeria Restaurant in Hicksville has been diagnosed with typhoid fever.

Health officials say the risk to the public is low, but they warn anyone who ate at the restaurant between Friday March 14 and Sunday March 16 may have been exposed. Health experts say typhoid symptoms will appear within 1-3 weeks of exposure. The symptoms include fever and headache, constipation or diarrhea and rose colored spots on the trunk of the body.

According to the department of health, it is Nassau's first reported case of typhoid this year. Officials say there were as many as seven cases reported last year, with most of those picked up by people traveling to Third World nations.

Dr. Kenneth Steier of Nassau University Medical Center says the disease is easily treated with antibiotics and the death rate is less than 1 percent in the U.S.

The restaurant's manager says the infected worker was from South America. An attorney for the owners says they are cooperating with the Board of Health. They say their inspectors did not find any violations of health code that would contribute to the spread of typhoid.
