it's boring! but painless. they basically tell you what you're entitled to by law (health benefits, etc) and offer all kinds of services like faxing, internet use (for those who don't have it) for your job search.

I thought I read something in the letter about the civil service and being able to find out about future exams....Do you know if I can do that there?

You can search for civil service exams (for Suffolk County) online:
Suffolk County Civil Service
I've been stalking this site lately. I took a test back in December and haven't gotten the results yet.
ETA: Here are the sites for Nassau County and NY State in case you are interested:

i didnt have to go to anything...call anyone, talk to anyone.. i just had to sign up and send in my claim every week online..
i was on it for 5 months.. just started working again 3 weeks ago
