Re: Ripped off?

One more thing--just MY opinion and I will have people who do not share this view. That is a decent sized stone of a very nice quality. I would prefer to see it in platinum and not white gold. I always liked platinum even before it was so popular. I think that platinum is worth the extra investment and it goes with a stone of that quality. Sorry if I am overstepping here.

I'll agree with you about this. I don't know the price of platinum now but I know gold is sky high. Maybe platinum is less? Just a thought.

Re: Ripped off?

I suggested platinum to them as well. But it is $3000 more.

now that sounds like a rip off.

Just checked..the price of platinum is twice that of gold.

Knowing that, maybe have them price just the stone..see what the setting actually costs.

E is probably the color, not the clarity. It is a great color.

Re: Ripped off?

If they are getting that good of a price on the stone, then they can get a better price on the setting unless its a custom setting maybe.

i have a feeling this might be a custom setting. if so, this is a great price, but truthfully this person can do better getting the stone and setting separately.

shop around - you can always go back to this person if you can't find something better but check out the DD and compare those stats to the stats of others and try and get the very best deal you can!

I always think it is a good idea to get the stone separately and then get the setting made. JMO.

Yes....but platinum does not have the quality of gold.

My aunt is a jeweler and has been for 20 years.

She said all jewelers mark up the price of platinum because everyone feels that's the metal to have.

Jewelers know this and price accordingly...3 times that of gold! And most jewelers will NOT steer you away from purchasing platinum because it is a major money maker for them.

HOWEVER...platinum scratches VERY easily and does not have the durability of gold. Jewelers call it a "soft metal" because it shows wear and tear very easily.

My aunt ALWAYS recommends white gold, as it way outlasts platinum and will always look as good as the day you purchased it.

To answer the OP's question...that is a good price for that stone/ ring.

great point!! this is the main reason why DH and i went with white gold - but we never would have known if my grandmother hadn't told me

Re: Ripped off?

How many facets? Also, how is the cut. Not the style, but the actual cut. If the stone is too shallow or too deep, the light will not reflect properly and the stone will appear dull or even dirty.

Definitely get a certified diamond, and make sure the jewler provides paperwork on the stone.

I'd get the setting elsewhere.
