LIKE become such a fixture in everyday conversation...???
my student aide and her friend are in my office talking about boys and I lost count with how many times they used the word 'like'

This reminded me of an episode of Family Ties, where Jennifer (Tina Yothers) decides she's going to be a Valley Girl ... and every other word out of her mouth is "like"
Anyone else remember this??

of course i remember this! and she wrote a letter to the family saying she was running away or some junk like that and every other word in the letter was "like". Only Mallory was able to "crack the code".

It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I want to smack people.
Smart people use it constantly. I think that's what really gets me. You're smart, educated..come up with some other words please!

My students use it and it takes so much longer for them to add to discussion in class. It drives me crazy!!!
On a side note about "um": I had a college roommate who actually wrote "um" in a paper.
