Religious Persons and Obama...
I was discussing with an older, religious women about politics (bad idea) and she went on to tell me that she believes that Obama will be elected and is the anti-christ. And that in 2012, there will be a new heaven on earth because (she feels) that he will be out of office and things will change for the better.
How do you feel about all this?

it doesn't really concern me... i am pretty sure he's not the anti-christ and i am not afraid of the world ending in 2012. i would probably have just smiled at her and moved on.

I'm with you.
But to answer the original question more directly, the 2012 reference has been made as the apocolypse in various cultures, and not unlike the Y2K theory is based on very liberally/loosely translated prophetic texts, using a whole bunch of artistic license.
What irks me is that if someone were so religious, then they would not make light of the predictions of Revelations in that they would consider the end of a presidency "Heaven on Earth." JMHO
And as a second rhetorical question....why don't they think the end of the Bush presidency is the beginning of Heaven on Earth?

that is interesting. and she was insinuating that this would happen because obama's presidency would end and the new president would make earth a peaceful, heaven-like place?
i am hopeful that if he is the next president that it will be his work between 2009 and 2012 that will make this world a better place.

I understand. But genereally the Heaven on Earth reference is from Revelations. Traditionally it was translated as the end of the world; some groups translate it as the end of Vatican Reign, and yet others as what she referred to, as a true Heaven on Earth, where we become harmonious. What I mean by her being "light" about it is that after what ever else we have been through in the past 20 years or so, as much as I am not Obama's greatest fan, I am wondering what he could do that is so much worse that he will be deemed the Anti-Christ over Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, George Bush (both of them), etc, etc... That was merely my point.
She may be right, Obama may be the worst of them all, I am just not certain how.
