women's conversation website... what do you think?

i was watching good morning america,
diane sawyer did a piece about women (especially women over 30) having good conversations online.

LINK TO STORY ON GMA

LINK TO SITE

diane asked, "what would you like to see happen on the site?" one of the ladies replied that she would like to see conversations that are true to the way women talk... we can start talking about the election and someone will comment "oh nice shoes" and the conversation turns to shoes.. very "organic"

i took a look at the site:
this is my take
#1 we have men on our site, i think that's a wonderful thing on so many levels
#2 we don't have famous women on our site, i think that doesn't distract our conversations
#3 online, you can't be COMPLETELY organic... people would "hijack" threads... that's why we have spinoffs.

wondering what are your opinions

From the few "conversations" that I peeked at, it looks very watered-down, and not a real "woman to woman" conversation. It seems like a Q&A roundtable with famous people. It doesn't feel "real" like on this site.

Plus, I don't like the format of the site. LIF is much easier to navigate than that site.

#1 - I agree, I like variety.
#2 - I agree
#3 - I disagree. I've posted on a message board for 7 years that has a free form system. Almost no moderation unless there is a death threat or something. When a thread is moved, you don't lose your posts since it still exists, but in a restricted forum. No *'d out words. No ads. And no rigidity regarding hijacking threads.

When you allow a thread to go where it will, spinoff within itself, it is the closest you get to a real verbal conversation. Some of the best conversations I've had there are 30+ pages long and span numerous subjects.

If someone is asking for specific help or advice, sure that should stay on topic. But I never understood how people get upset about things going off-topic. I think those are the best.

The hijacking thing isn't as big a deal on other sites as it seems to be on LIF.

Personally I love when threads change a little from the original topic. A typical thread here is mostly just individual responses that don't really tie into each other. That's not at all like a real conversation.
