How much do you tip doormen?

We live in a co-op buliding and we need to tip our doormen for the holidays...we just don't know how much to give. They pool the tips together and split it up. We moved in in May so we haven't been here a solid year yet...not sure if that should make it less or not?

Hmm, I've never had to tip a doorman before, but if it were me, I'd probably tip $50. I don't know if that's too much or not. Are you friendly enough wit a neighbor to ask?

how many ppl do you have? our total came to $600 this year (varied depending on position and service) but we did tip a litlle less last year when we werent here for a year (i think it was like $300-$400 last year).

ETA: were there there for 3 mos last year when we had to tip. also, i asked around a lot about this bc i thought you had to give a certain amt to everyone which would have come to $900 and apparently that would have been overtipping.

yup we gave $600. half of these ppl i dont even know! we were going to give $900 but thank god my friends let us know that we were overtipping.

when we lived in an apartment we gave $20 per door man and $50 to the super. I asked everyone on my floor what was appropriate and everyone said 20 per person so that was what we gave. (There were 10 doormen - so 250 in total).

i think it depends on where you live and what services they provide. we're in the city and i've actually heard as much as $75-$100 per doorman but we had 27 ppl to tip so we scaled it back and did $30-$40 to the doormen and varying amts to all of the other ppl. I think its crazy considering how much rent they charge just to be in a doorman bldg and truthfully the vast majority dont do anything for us!
